Live and act

childhood and education

Hans-Jürgen Wegener was born in Berlin, but grew up in Saxony . Since his grandfather and great-grandfather on his mother's side had already been foresters, his career aspirations were pretty much clear from the age of ten. Hunting experiences in a small game area of relatives near Oschatz also contributed to his wanting to become a forester. At the beginning of his apprenticeship in 1947/1948 in the Dassel Forestry Office in Solling , the logging of the North German Timber Control Commission (NGTC) in the course of the so-called "reparation blows" was a formative experience for Wegener. According to his own statement, they not only brought before his eyes large-scale clearcuts , the loss of wood and forest devastation, but also the cohesion of the foresters in these difficult times. After Wegener did not receive immediate admission to the course, he extended his apprenticeship until 1948/1949. He then studied at the Forestry Faculty of the Georg-August University in Göttingen in Hann. Münden forest science . He completed his legal clerkship in 1955 with the Great State Forest Examination in Hanover .

Career history

This was followed by a good 15 years of various forestry activities in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1974 to 1993, Wegener was the forest manager of the higher forest authority Westphalia-Lippe in Münster . In the early 1980s he was one of the initiators of the “Silviculture and Nature Conservation” working group, founded by the Higher Forest Authority Westphalia-Lippe and the State Association for Nature Conservation and Environment North Rhine- Westphalia. This discussion group includes biologists and foresters who develop joint statements on fundamental issues. When Wegener opened his home again with German unity , he used this to support his forest colleagues in the new federal states and to impart knowledge from his wealth of experience in forest administration work and forest management. It was also particularly important to him to arouse the interest of the landowners in the management of their regained private forest property. In this way, a lively partnership quickly developed, especially between the state forest administrations of North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg . Shortly after his 65th birthday, the forest department director and permanent representative of the chamber director retired on May 1, 1993. Wegener remained active in a variety of ways afterwards.

Diverse part-time and voluntary commitment

In addition to his official obligations, Wegener has been very involved in forest associations on a part-time basis. In 1963 he took over the management of the forest farmers' association of North Rhine-Westphalia from Friedrich Graf von Westphalen . V., which he held until 1969, initially together with Gottfried Freiherr von Lüninck and later with his successor Assessor Wolf-Hubertus Kolster. Wegener was then managing director from 1969 to 1973 and from 1977 to 1993 chairman of the forestry association for North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1986 also vice president of the German forestry association , which made him an honorary member in recognition of his services. Under his leadership, the Forest Association for North Rhine-Westphalia has campaigned with numerous courses and excursions to achieve a meaningful link between economic and ecological issues in the local forestry sector . On Wegener's initiative, the forest association joined the state community for nature conservation and the environment in North Rhine-Westphalia. Many international relationships were also established through the forest association. Encounters with forestry people from the Eastern Bloc "and the experience that the forest connected us far more than politics could separate us" , as Wegener once noted, were particularly important .

Wegener was also a co-editor of the journal Natur und Landschaft and freelance work for the specialist journal Forst und Holz . In addition to numerous specialist articles, he has written several papers and books on the subject of private forests and their care. For decades he also dealt with the history of the German Forest Association, for which he published the standard work Responsibility for Generations - 100 Years of the German Forest Association in 1999 on the occasion of the anniversary. Especially for this, but also for his other services to the German Forest Association, it honored him with the Lorenz Wappes Prize during the anniversary event from 23 to 26 September 1999 in Schwerin . Wegener is also a member of the Association of German Foresters (BDF) .

His outstanding commitment to the interests of the forest and national and international environmental protection was also recognized in 1995 with the award of the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Oberlandforstmeister a. D. Hans-Jürgen Wegener lived in Tecklenburg until his death .

Quote

“After all, forest owners and foresters are responsible for a third of the federal territory. You have been given a fair amount of sociopolitical responsibility. It is laid down in laws. They influence or even determine how the forest is dealt with. The authorities should make it clear that they recognize the fulfillment of the tasks that are important to the state in terms of culture and politics and that they also expect them to be carried out properly in the future. The assessment of such questions cannot be left to organizational and budget experts! "
