from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Bachmann (born April 30, 1852 in Winikon , † November 12, 1917 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss painter and art teacher.

Life

Hans Bachmann grew up in Winikon (today part of the Triengen municipality ), a small farming village in the Lucerne Central Plateau. His family has been attested there since the 17th century.

He attended middle school in Lucerne and then took private lessons in drawing and painting from Seraphin Xaver Weingartner . In 1870 he went to Düsseldorf to the art academy ; he was a student of Eduard von Gebhardt , then (privately) of Karl Hoff . At that time there was no arts and crafts school in Switzerland. In Düsseldorf, Bachmann was a member of the artists' association Malkasten from 1876 to 1897 , where he became friends with the Swiss painter Aloys Fellmann, who was born in Oberkirch . Bachmann had to interrupt his stay in Düsseldorf 1880–1882 and return to Switzerland because of a lung disease; he was mostly in the mountains to relax.

In 1887 he married Wilhelmina Helene Dorothee Köller in Detmold (born September 6, 1861 in Detmold, † June 26, 1943 in Lucerne); the marriage remained childless. In 1889 Bachmann and his wife visited Paris and visited a. a. the Eiffel Tower and the World's Fair . This offered a comprehensive exhibition of French art as well as numerous works by international artists.

From 1895 Bachmann was in Zurich - Reiden , from 1905 in Lucerne. From 1897 to 1905 he worked as a teacher at the Zurich School of Applied Arts , from 1903 until his death in 1917 at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts and also at a private painting school for women in Lucerne.

Bachmann was a member of the "Zurich Artists' Association" founded in 1897. and from 1899 to 1901 member of the Federal Art Commission. In 1909 he was one of the founding members of the Lucerne Secession.

In 1918 the Kunstmuseum Bern dedicated a commemorative exhibition to him.

In Düsseldorf Bachmann painted typical Rococo interiors under the influence of his teacher Karl Hoff . This changed on the occasion of the convalescence stay in Switzerland, as the painter describes in his «Curriculum vitae» around 1887: «[...] that I really got to know our beautiful Switzerland, became intimate with the country and its people, studied customs and traditions Time, when convalescent, painted about a hundred nature studies. Since that time I have painted almost exclusively pictures from our country and mountain life. […] So far I have had less financial success with the so-called peasant pictures than I used to with the sweet rococo pictures; but I hope that will change too. "

Indeed it was. His peasant genre painting , the descriptions of peasant everyday life and customs, the depiction of the landscape of the Central Plateau and the mountains brought the painter national and international recognition, including various honors, such as the gold medal of the Crystal Palace Picture Gallery Exhibition London in 1887 for the picture Christmas singer in the canton Lucerne . In 1896 Bachmann received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition Berlin ( Great Berlin Art Exhibition ).

For example, Bachmann received public commissions for the Bundeshaus in Bern and in 1903 for two murals - "Gessler's Death" and "Tells Death" - for the Tell Chapel in Hohlen Gasse in Sisikon ( Canton Uri ), which was completed in 1905 with Ernst Hodel junior and were inaugurated. The publisher Frédéric Zahn hired him, along with Albert Anker and other Swiss painters, as an illustrator for the edition of Jeremias Gotthelf's works published from 1894 onwards .
