Hans F. Koenekamp (born December 3, 1891 in Denison , Iowa , † September 12, 1992 in Northridge , California ) was an American special effects artist and cameraman of German descent.

Live and act

Hans F. Koenekamp, ​​son of German immigrants ( Könekamp ) from Oldenburg , had started as a projectionist in Los Angeles . In 1913 he joined the film as a cameraman of slapstick comedies by producer Mack Sennett . Koenekamp then worked for Fox Film Corporation before moving to Vitagraph in 1917 . There he was behind the camera in numerous short films with Larry Semon . After eight years working for this production company, he joined First National .

Finally, Koenekamp specialized in working as a cameraman for special effects. In this role, he oversaw a number of high-profile Hollywood productions for Warner Bros. , including Max Reinhardt's Midsummer Night's Dream , Michael Curtiz 's Lord of the Seven Seas , John Huston's The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and George Cukor's A New Star in the Sky . In 1944, he received an Oscar nomination together with Nathan Levinson and Rex Wimpy for his performance in the propagandistic aviation and war drama Into the Japanese Sun ( Air Force ) . After working on Billy Wilder's Lindbergh - My Flight over the Ocean , Hans F. Koenekamp withdrew into private life at the age of 65.

The cameraman died three quarters of a year after his 100th birthday in December 1991, which was appropriately recognized by the trade press. On this occasion he received the President's Award of the ASC in the same year . His son was the cameraman Fred J. Koenekamp, who died in 2017 .
