Rex Wimpy
Rexford "Rex" Wimpy (born December 18, 1899 in Jonesboro , Grant County , † December 29, 1972 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American special effects artist , cameraman and photographer who was nominated in 1944 for an Oscar .
Life
Little is known about Rex Wimpy's life up to the point in time when he worked on his first film. He first appeared in 1927 as a camera assistant in Victor Fleming's war film The Rough Riders . This was followed by further work behind the camera in films of various genres. In 1929 he worked with William Powell in the musical comedy Pointed Heels and in 1933 in the Michael Curtiz film The Secret of the Wax Museum . The collaboration with Curtiz was repeated in the 1937 comedy A Guy To Fall In Love With Errol Flynn and Joan Blondell . With Curtiz and Flynn he worked again in 1939 in the western Lord of the Wild West . Olivia de Havilland and Ann Sheridan were also there . In the 1940 romantic drama Hell, where is your victory? by Anatole Litvak with Bette Davis and Charles Boyer he was responsible for the special effects. He worked with Bette Davis in 1941 in the film comedy The Bride came together again on delivery . James Cagney was Davis' partner in the film. With Cagney a collaboration was repeated Wimpys in the 1942 action drama Heroes of the Skies , Michael Curtiz was the director of this film.
In 1944 , Rex Wimpy, along with Hans F. Koenekamp and Nathan Levinson, received an Oscar nomination in the category "Best Visual Effects" for the war film Into the Japanese Sun , alternate title: Air Force , by Howard Hawks . The film was nominated for other Oscars and received an award in the “Best Editing” category. The Oscar for the best visual effects went to Fred Sersen and Roger Heman senior and the love triangle Crash Dive .
In the war adventure of 1944 Ticket to Marseille , the director was again Michael Curtiz, the leading actors Humphrey Bogart , Claude Rains and Michèle Morgan . Rex Wimpy took care of the special effects. Immediately thereafter, in 1944, she worked again with Humphrey Bogart, this time directed by Howard Hawks, in the adventure film To Have and Not to Have , Lauren Bacall and Walter Brennan were also on the cast list. In the film noir I fight for you (1945) by Alfred Hitchcock with Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck , Wimpy worked behind the camera. In 1960 he worked - again behind the camera - on Hitchcock's legendary horror thriller Psycho . A collaboration with John Huston , Clark Gable , Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift followed in 1961 in the western drama Misfits . Wimpy also worked on the 1963 film drama The Wildest Among Thousands with Paul Newman . In 1967 he worked on the science fiction film The Reluctant Astronaut with Leslie Nielsen and in 1970 on the comedic drama Darling Lili by Blake Edwards with Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson .
Rex Wimpy was married to Opal Belle Wimpy (1903-1960). He died at the age of 73 and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale , Los Angeles County , California .
