Hans Georg (Joseph) Meyer (born May 25, 1792 in Göttingen , † November 19, 1863 in Hanover ) was a royal Hanoverian lieutenant general .

Meyer was allegedly the son of the alleged, later annulled, marriage between the Hanoverian Prince Wilhelm , Duke of Clarence , and Caroline von Linsingen . The Duke later became King William IV of Great Britain and Ireland. It is known that William had an extramarital relationship with Irish actress Dora Jordan , which resulted in ten children who were given the family name FitzClarence .

Joseph Meyer was raised by Ruben Meyer, a patron Jew from Göttingen, and his wife Rösgen Gumprecht . Later he came to the court of the King of Hanover, where he was often the king's companion on trips to other royal houses. Meyer was hired as a rider and at the same time made an officer in the army . The Hanoverian state calendar of 1836 lists him as a cavalry master , army rider and stable master . By 1845 he was promoted to head of the Hofmar stables on the Hohen Ufer by King Ernst August I in Hanover. When the king died on November 18, 1851 whose blind son became King George V proclaimed. Citizens from Hanover are said to have called for "King Meyer" as his successor at the castle. Inscriptions with "King Meyer" were found on the stable doors. On May 14, 1859, he was promoted to major general. Hans Georg Meyer died on November 19, 1863 in Hanover.

His first marriage was to Amalie Detmering. After her death he married Hildegard von Reiche in 1837 (born January 6, 1818 in Hanover). The couple had three sons:

  • Hans Karl Louis Alexander von Meyer (born July 4, 1840 in Hanover; † December 5, 1924 in Hanover), Prussian major general , raised to the Prussian nobility on February 28, 1885, married to Hedwig Rimpau from Braunschweig
  • Eugen Otto Friedrich August von Meyer (born September 23, 1841 in Hanover; † December 5, 1912 in Hanover), Prussian major general, raised to the Prussian nobility on June 13, 1883, married to Sophie Marianne Auguste Gorissen from Hamburg
  • Friedrich Louis Karl Julius von Meyer (born July 15, 1854 in Hanover; † October 30, 1914 in Ypres ), Prussian lieutenant general, raised to the Prussian nobility on February 28, 1885, married to Ellen Dorothe Rickmers from Bremen; fallen in the First Battle of Flanders .
