Hans Herse

Hans Herse (born December 10, 1855 in Neuteich , West Prussia , † January 23, 1939 in Braunschweig ) was a German painter and teacher .

Life

Herse studied at art schools and academies in Berlin and Munich before taking up a position in Braunschweig in 1879 in the studio of the Ducal Court Theater and in the office of the architect Constantin Uhde . From 1880 to 1924 he worked as a painting and drawing teacher at the Braunschweig craft and applied arts school. He also taught at the municipal secondary school for girls in Braunschweig and at the castle school in Wolfenbüttel , the director of which Anna Vorwerk was one of his friends. In 1881, together with Johannes Leitzen and Constantin Uhde, Herse was one of the founders of the sociable artists' association Feuchter Brush , to which Wilhelm Raabe also belonged from 1883 .

The regent Prince Albrecht , whose sons Herse taught, awarded him the title of professor.

Herese's students included Käthe Bewig , Hedwig Hornburg and Margarethe Raabe .

Herse painted exclusively using the watercolor technique . His motifs were landscapes and exact cityscapes of Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel. Examples are depictions of Wolfenbüttel Castle and the half-timbered houses on Ruhfäutchenplatz in Braunschweig. Some of his works are in the Braunschweig Municipal Museum .
