Hans Rossmann

Hans Rossmann (born May 14, 1868 in Vohenstrauß / Upper Palatinate , † September 29, 1915 in Munich ) was a German painter , graphic artist and illustrator .

Life

Hans Rossmann was born in 1868 as the son of the history and glass painter Johan Baptist Rossmann (1836–1885) in Vohenstrauss in the Upper Palatinate. After training with his father, he began studying with Wilhelm von Diez and JC Herterich at the Academy in Munich in 1884 at the age of 16½ . After that he continued to live in Munich.

After working for the Hermann Rossner publishing house in Zeitz for several years, he was appointed professor at the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Wroclaw in October 1903 . There he took over the class for decorative drawing and painting as well as the artistic and technical management of the workshop for glass painting. In 1908 Rossmann was one of the founding members of the Silesian Artists' Association , which was founded on the initiative of Hans Poelzig , director of the art school since 1903 . a. the architect Max Berg , the painter Max Wislicenus and the sculptor Paul Schulz.

Between 1897 and 1899, Hans Rossmann stayed several times at Neubünsch Castle near Rosenheim . A number of landscape paintings and portraits of the rural population were created there, making Rossmann one of the main representatives of the Samerberg painters. As an illustrator, he has made numerous contributions to the magazine “ Jugend - Münchner Illustrierte Wochenschrift für Kunst und Leben ” since it was launched in 1896. 72 works arose from his hand: title pages, drawings for texts or full-page illustrations, even during his time in Wroclaw. At the same time, Rossmann was represented with illustrations in the satirical weekly magazine Simplicissimus, also published in Munich . Hans Rossmann was a member of the Munich Secession .

In 1912, his health forced him to give up his position at the Breslau Art Academy . After a long illness, Hans Rossmann died in Munich in 1915 at the age of 47.

family

The Rossmann family from Vohenstrauss produced several artists. In addition to his father and Hans Rossmann, who worked as a glass painter, there was also his older brother Max Rossmann (* 1861 in Vohenstrauß; † 1926 in Amorbach ), a painter, sculptor, craftsman and church painter. Max Rossmann's wife Lilly was also a painter, as was their son of the same name, Munich-based Max Rossmann (1889–1961), who worked as a landscape and architecture painter.
