The haplogroup C is in the Human Genetics a haplogroup the mitochondria ( mtDNA ).

Haplogroup C is believed to have originated somewhere between the Caspian Sea and Lake Baikal about 60,000 years ago. She is a descendant of the haplogroup M.

Haplogroup C is represented in Northeast Asia (including Siberia) and is also one of five Indian haplogroups , the others being A, B, D and X.

In his popular book The Seven Daughters of Eve , Bryan Sykes names the first mother of this mtDNA haplogroup Chochmingwu.

This phylogenetic family tree of the subgroups of haplogroup C is based on a publication by Mannis van Oven and Manfred Kayser and subsequent scientific research.
