Harold Brown (politician)
Harold Brown (born September 19, 1927 in New York City , † January 4, 2019 in Rancho Santa Fe ) was an American nuclear physicist and politician ( Democratic Party ).
Brown served as Secretary of Defense from January 21, 1977 to January 20, 1981 under President Jimmy Carter . Previously, he had under President Lyndon B. Johnson of already the position of United States Secretary of the Air Force (Secretary of the Air Force ) exercised.
In 1960 and 1961 he was director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and from 1969 to 1977 he served as director of the California Institute of Technology .
In 1969 Brown was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1977 to the National Academy of Sciences .
