Harro Schmidt (2015)

Harro Schmidt (also: Harro DB Schmidt ; * July 20, 1957 in Großburgwedel ) is a German visual artist specializing in multimedia , installation art and painting . He also works as a curator .

Harro Schmidt attended the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Seelze from 1971 to 1977 . After graduating from high school in May 1977, Schmidt studied fine arts in Hanover from 1980 to 1991 at the University of Applied Sciences for Art and Design and, in parallel, geology and paleontology at the then University of Hanover . In 1992 he became a master student of Professor Ulrich Baehr . In the same year he won a prize for his copy-art project in the competition for the exterior wall design of the NDR trade fair pavilion for CeBIT and the industrial trade fair .

As an artist, Schmidt has been represented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia since the 1990s.

Also in the early 1990s, he began his Ernst August cycle of works around the equestrian statue of Ernst August I, one of the kings of Hanover .

In 1993 Schmidt founded the Kunsthalle Faust on the same-named site of the Faust cultural center in Hanover. Since 1996 Schmidt has been curating internationally oriented art projects in the exhibition hall as well as at home and abroad. Since 2013 he has also continued his work as curator and director for the KV Kunsthalle Hannover eV.

In 2014, Schmidt curated Shifting Africa - artistic perspectives from the Sub-Saharan in Hanover and at the Mediations Biennale in Poznań .

In 2016 Harro Schmidt was one of the curators of OSTRALE (OSTRALE O16 error: x) in Dresden and one of the catalog authors. Also in 2016 he was one of the curators of the 5th Mediations Biennale Poznań 2016 with the title Fundamental .

In 2018 he curated IJacking Hannover - Festival for Invisible Art in Hannover, together with Arthur Clay and in cooperation with Virtuale Switzerland.
