The Catholic parish church Heilig Kreuz (to be more precise, the location of the Holy Cross ) in Kreuzweingarten , a district of Euskirchen in the Euskirchen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) is located in the middle of the cemetery . The church, dedicated to the discovery of the cross , still has parts from the 14th century and is a protected cultural monument .

history

As early as 1266, the church in "Wingardin" is owned by the Münstereifel Monastery , a subsidiary of the Prüm Abbey . The oldest parts of today's church, the tower and the choir , date from the 14th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the nave was partially rebuilt or rebuilt.

Exterior

The two-aisled church made of plastered quarry stone with a rectangular choir and a western tower in front is 17 m long and 10 m wide. The tower shows only narrow light slits on the lower floors. In the bell chamber there are crenellated windows with side brackets . The tower is covered with an eight-sided sloping pyramid roof on which there is a Gothic cross.

The nave, which is covered with a gable roof, has three pointed arch windows on the south side with a stone frame . The aisle on the north side was added in 1660 under the pastor Everhard Boßhammer. A small sacristy was added between the choir and aisle .

Interior

The oak door is believed to date from the 17th century. In the anteroom is the staircase to the organ gallery, also from the 17th century, which was originally in the church. The so-called baptismal niche is located in the side aisle. This arched niche with a window opening was the entrance before the renovation.

The main nave has a flat roof and the side aisle has a cross vault . The aisle is separated by two round arches. A pointed arch separates the choir, which has a wooden barrel vault, from the nave.

Leaded glass window

Window depicting the Madonna and Child (1931)

Most of the stained glass windows were created in the 1920s and those of the southern choir wall in 1931 in Ludwig Preckel's workshop in Cologne. The scenes represent z. B. the Madonna and Child, the Annunciation and Jesus in the vineyard.

organ

The organ comes from the workshop of Franz Joseph Schorn . It was restored in 1982 by the company Josef Weimbs Orgelbau .

Bells

There are five bells hanging in the tower of the church , all of which are cast in bronze:

From the middle of the 17th century to 1977 the Holy Cross Church had a ringing with three historical bells, the cross bell from 1398, the Mary bell from 1477 and the peace bell from 1649. In an expert report from 1958, their strikes are f sharp '(Peace bell), gis' (Marienglocke) and ais' (cross bell).

The peace bell damaged by the war was repaired several times, but this never lasted long, so that in 1977 it was replaced by a new bell, the brotherhood bell sounding a semitone lower. Only in 1988 was it possible to repair the peace bell using a newly developed process. Since the brotherhood bell has the strike note f ', the f sharp' of the peace bell was reinterpreted enharmonically as ges', as were the other two historical bells on a flat 'and b'. At the same time, a new, lighter bell was cast again, the angel bell with the striking sound of the '', which extended the ringing to the current five bells.

The four lower bells form a tetrachord in the Phrygian mode due to the semitone between the two largest bells , a rather rare sound combination that came about through the history of the Kreuzweingartner bells. With the smallest bell, the result is a sound combination that corresponds to the beginnings of the hymns "From the bottom of my heart" and "Rejoice, redeemed Christendom" and is otherwise not known from any ringing with five bells.
