Heinrich August Christian von Brandenstein (born July 26, 1787 in Prenzlau , † September 25, 1851 in Dresden ) was a German chamberlain , major general and from 1847 to 1851 city commander in the Braunschweig garrison .

Military career

Heinrich von Brandenstein was born in Prenzlau in the Uckermark as the son of the Prussian Colonel von Brandenstein, who died in 1814 .

He took effect on 1 March 1800 at the age of 12 years in the Prussian Army and served first as a private first class - a corporal in the infantry regiment "von Kleist" by Franz Kasimir von Kleist . On February 25, 1804 he was promoted to ensign and on March 27, 1806 to second lieutenant.

Battle of Ölper (1809)

As a second lieutenant, Brandenstein took part in the 1806 campaign against Napoleon . He was wounded on November 6th near Lübeck and was taken prisoner by the surrender near Ratkau the following day. In 1808 he quit his service in the Prussian army without saying goodbye and on April 21, 1809 switched to the corps of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig , which became known as the Schwarze Schar . Here he was used as an adjutant of the 2nd Battalion. After the campaign of 1809 and the battle at Ölper , von Brandenstein switched to English service with the regiment (referred to there as the English-Brunswick light infantry regiment). He fought in Portugal , Spain and southern France , being wounded several times in combat on the Iberian Peninsula .

On February 20, 1811, he was appointed captain of the 9th Company. In the ensuing fighting, von Brandenstein was injured again on October 13, 1812 at Monasterio and on August 31, 1813 in the storming of St. Sebastian and on October 7 in the Battle of Bidassoa. Since July 24th he led the 2nd company of the regiment. On December 24, 1814, he was promoted to major , was then commander of the 2nd light battalion from January 17, 1815 and was seriously wounded on June 18, 1815 in the Battle of Waterloo .

In the years 1816 to 1819 he was given leave of absence and received “ waiting allowance ” during this time . On October 7, 1819, he was reassigned as a commander and initially commanded the 1st Line Battalion, from 1820 the Leib Battalion and from January 1, 1824 the Guard Grenadier Battalion. In the meantime he had been subsequently dismissed from Prussian service in 1822. On May 4, 1827, he became chamberlain to Duke Charles II of Braunschweig . On December 30, 1828 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on October 21, 1830 he was given command of the infantry regiment . Von Brandenstein was appointed colonel on October 1, 1836, and finally retired as major general on September 28, 1841. He was then city commandant of Braunschweig until his death on September 25, 1851.
