Heinrich Schlitt (born August 21, 1849 in Biebrich am Rhein , † November 19, 1923 in Munich ) was an artist who was best known for his dwarf , legend and fairy tale motifs .

life and work

Schlitt was the son of a chancellery. He was initially a soldier in the Dutch service.

His talent as a painter was promoted by the Wiesbaden painter Kaspar Kögler , who ran a painting and drawing school in Wiesbaden. Since May 1875 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Barth and Wilhelm Lindenschmit in the nature class. He exhibited his works for the Munich Artists' Cooperative in the Royal Glass Palace . He lived for some time at Heustraße 18 and later at Schwanthalerstraße 95.

Draftsman, illustrator and faience painter

He took the motifs for his humorous pictures from everyday situations. Schlitt painted pictures and gave his motif to jugs. He also worked successfully as an illustrator for the Illustrirte Zeitung , the magazines Über Land und Meer , Daheim and Schalk . Although Schlitt has remained almost unknown in Germany, he has an international reputation as a well-known gnome and faience painter, and his art objects were popular in America. Among other things , he designed ceramics for Villeroy & Boch at the beginning of the 20th century . The beer mugs he designed are still sought-after collector's items on the art market today .

Wall painter

Together with Kögler and his younger colleague Wilhelm Weimar (1859–1914), he painted the “beer cellar” in the Ratskeller , the new town hall in Wiesbaden designed by the architect Georg von Hauberrisser . The most precious humorous , realistic frescoes of Wilhelmine Wiesbaden were - although under since the 1930s listed building standing - not restored in 1987 from "financial reasons" but eradicated.

The cellar of the also of Hauberrisser in the style of neo -built town hall in Munich, funny and profound vault, ceiling and wall paintings Schlitt was designed in 1905, were maintained. Today they are one of the many attractions of the Bavarian capital and represent a special kind of jewel that not only the Rathauskeller operators are “particularly proud of.” He also created some friezes for the Prince Luitpold Palace in Munich.
