Heinrich Suso Waldeck ( pseudonym ), maiden name Augustin Popp CSsR (born October 3, 1873 in Wscherau , Austria-Hungary , † September 4, 1943 in St. Veit im Mühlkreis , Upper Austria ) was an Austrian clergyman and writer.

Life

Augustin Popp was born in 1873 as the son of a Catholic German-Bohemian teacher couple in the Pilsen region and attended grammar school in Pilsen . In 1895 he joined the Redemptorist congregation in Eggenburg and was ordained a priest in 1900 . In 1904 he was dispensed from religious vows and worked as a secular priest in Lower Austria and Styria . Afterwards he stayed in Prussia a . a. as a bank clerk in Dresden.

In 1909 he returned to Austria and worked as an editor for the news world sheet in Vienna. From 1918 to 1924 he worked as a pastor in Lichtenwörth , Guntramsdorf and 1920–1924 in Vienna at the parish of St. Othmar and as a religion teacher and for a time in hospital pastoral care .

From June 1933, Augustin Popp designed the newly introduced “Spiritual Hour” at Radio Verkehrs AG (RAVAG), but lost his radio position in 1938 when Austria was annexed . Sick and impoverished, he found acceptance and support as a spiritual director at the Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Savior, first in Vienna VII and from 1939 in their monastery at St. Veit Castle in Upper Austria.

Augustin Popp's decades of lyric work was first reflected in the book edition of the Facial Poems in 1927 . Other lyrical and epic publications followed. In the literary circle “Die Leostube” in the Café Fichtehof in Vienna I , whose main concern was to develop and preserve the highest possible, “pure” poetic language based on the members' texts, he collected conservative Catholic artists such as Paula Preradović , Richard Billinger , Rudolf Henz , Ernst Scheibelreiter , Friedrich Schreyvogl and Carry Hauser . He was a friend of many years with Josef Weinheber . He was a member of the Austrian Leo Society .

In memory of Heinrich Suso Waldeck, a memorial plaque was placed on the facade of the Maria am Gestade church on December 31, 1953 .
