Helmut Schliesing (born May 18, 1953 in Brandenburg an der Havel , GDR ) is a former German politician ( SPD ) and educator .

Helmut Schliesing graduated from the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald as a qualified teacher for biology and chemistry and then worked for 3 years as a teacher in Damsdorf . After an aspiration at his previous place of study, he received his doctorate on a biological topic in 1988 . Then he was up to the political changes Hygiene - inspector .

The up to then non-party was one of the co-founders of the SDP in the city of Brandenburg (Havel) on December 13, 1989 . On May 6, 1990, the city ​​council elected him as the first freely elected mayor of the city of Brandenburg (Havel) after the political change. From 1990 to 2002 he was in charge of the city. Without prior administrative training and experience, he was responsible for building up local self-government under the new political conditions. Important developments and investments were started, such as the construction of the university of applied sciences , a new fire station for the Brandenburg an der Havel fire brigade , a new building for the Brandenburg theater and the Marienbad and the expansion of the clinic and the Beetzsee regatta course . The rebuilding of the New Town Hall, which began prematurely and was canceled after his term of office, is counted as a mistake.

Helmut Schliesing was elected twice and survived a deselection process in 1995 during his second term in office.

After retiring from political office, he was operations manager in the Clinic Service Center of the Brandenburg City Clinic for two years, and from 2004 to 2018 head of the clinic's medical school.

He lives in Rietz , a district of the municipality of Kloster Lehnin .
