Herbert Schuldt (born July 19, 1941 in Hamburg ) is a German poet , essayist , translator , visual artist and designer of radio plays .

Life

Herbert Schuldt is the son of Harald H. Schuldt, the grandson of the founder of the H. Schuldt shipping company . After stints in London, Paris and Vienna, he lived for a long time in Hamburg and New York, since 1999 increasingly residing in China and living in Beijing from 2004 to 2009 and since then in Hamburg. He usually only uses the stage name "Schuldt". He exercised numerous activities, at the age of 19 he was a temporary electronics salesman, worked as a sound engineer and on construction sites, read dictionaries and wrote essays, wrote audio pieces and directed, translated, staged performances and wrote books. Schuldt received the Paul Scheerbart Prize at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2000 for his “artful transcriptions of American poetry and his avant-garde measurements of English and German vocabulary” . Similar to Kurt Schwitters , Oskar Pastior or Gerhard Rühm , Schuldt uses character texts and poetic puns in his thoroughly experimental literature.

In 2014 he was named a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg.

His work Mamlukes Answer (1984) consists of acronym poems. From an initial word, for example “dance”, he creates his texts: “Doing deeds out of curiosity”. In Decals Home (1995) he gets to the bottom of the words, examines the reality of language and exposes hidden clichés. In Olga at the Cosmic Door. Bras, perfumes, and bars. Headlines from New York (2000), finally, Schuldt grotesquely concentrates the advertising, glitter and hype of this cosmopolitan city in haiku- like short forms. For him, writing always also means “ imaginative construction, new combination, unbinding, rearrangement of pre-tracked language paths”. Hanns Zischler described him in Die Zeit as the “last Dadaist ”; he is "an unusually clairaudient translator who listens to the sound and the noise, the rhyme and alliteration of the words."

Schuldt transformed Hölderlin's Am Quell der Donau through unusual sound changes.

His radio play version Am Quell der Donau , which was released in 2002 as a media combination (book, leporello folder and CD), received attention. It is named after a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin ; only a fragment of 117 verses of the text is preserved, which Schuldt read to his non-German-speaking American poet colleague Robert Kelly . Kelly translated the strange sounds as he understood them; so the title "Unquell the Dawn Now" came out. The linguist Schuldt then translated back to Kelly's sounds from the American, etc., and finally into a Holderlin German. For example, “But everything goes like this” arose: though all's gate so , and from this “even though everything is a gate like this” and then vainlike. All are so . Schuldt writes in his epilogue: "Sound is the soul of language, while the meanings of words are its body."

Schuldt also became known not least for his speech collages, which he himself referred to as "audio pieces", with which he enriched the genre , which Klaus Schöning described as "New Radio Play" in 1968, with linguistic music-like sound experiments. Special mention should be made of “Germany recite, repeat Germany”, which in April 1970 had a disturbing effect on the listeners of the first program of the WDR.

Artist

Schuldt has dealt with art all his life. In the 60s he lived and worked in a basement in the Brüderstraße in Hamburg district of Neustadt . On the one hand, he translated art books and wrote texts for exhibition catalogs, on the other hand, he staged himself as an artist. When Friedensreich Hundertwasser was a guest lecturer at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg in 1959 , he and Schuldt, Bazon Brock and others drew a ten kilometer long “Endless Line” that stretched across all parts of a university area, which caused a scandal at the time. As an action artist , Schuldt caused a sensation in 1960 with his “International Exhibition of Nothing”, which took place in a dilapidated Hamburg villa and in which only empty picture frames , unpainted canvases and clumps of clay were exhibited. In 2004 the Hamburger Kunsthalle recalled the art scandal of that time in the exhibition “Art in Hamburg” by recreating the exhibition and completing it with the original excerpts from the press indignation that followed. Schuldt's other exhibitions took place, for example, in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2000: Branded Stairwall ) and in New York (2001: the looks of words ). As a lecturer, he also likes to use performance elements. From 2002 he devoted himself to photography, especially in New York and China.
