Heriberto Hermes OSB ( English Herbert John Hermes ; born May 25, 1933 in Shallow Water , Scott County , Kansas , USA ; † January 3, 2018 in Palmas , Tocantins state , Brazil ) was an American Roman Catholic religious and prelate of Cristalândia . In 2002 he was awarded the national prize for human rights in Brazil.

Life

Heriberto Hermes, son of John Nicholas and Mary Ann Hermes Hermes Hilger, joined the Congregation of Benedictine in, put the profession on July 11, 1954, received on 26 May 1960, the priestly ordination .

Hermes came to Brazil on October 4, 1962, during the Second Vatican Council, as a missionary and pastor. He worked for many years in Mineiros in the Brazilian state of Goiás . As pastor of the Holy Spirit Parish in Mineiros, he worked as a teacher in public schools and was committed to the education of the population. He was also secretary of the social welfare organization of Obras Sociais da Paróquia Divino Espírito Santo , which carried out numerous projects.

Pope John Paul II appointed him prelate of the Territorial Prelature of Cristalândia on June 20, 1990 . The bishop of Ruy Barbosa , Mathias William Schmidt OSB, donated him episcopal ordination on September 2nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Ignatius Jerome Strecker , Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas , and Michael Francis McAuliffe , Bishop of Jefferson City . As a motto he chose FIAT .

Hermes was particularly committed to social pastoral care and the defense of human rights because of the numerous human rights violations that took place in Brazil at the time, especially during the military and civil dictatorship. In 1994 he founded the Center for Human Rights in Cristalândia CDHC ( Portuguese Centro de Direitos Humanos de Cristalândia). He became a member of the national human rights movement and supported the establishment of several human rights centers, together with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation , among others . In 2002 he was awarded the national prize for human rights.

On February 25, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. He lived in the Redemptorist community in Paraíso do Tocantins until his death and worked as a parish worker.
