The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas ( Latin Archidioecesis Kansanopolitana in Kansas , English Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Kansas City , Kansas , USA .
history
The archbishopric was on July 19, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. initially founded as the Apostolic Vicariate of the Indian Territories east of the Rocky Mountains ("Vicariate Apostolic of Indian Territory East of the Rocky Mountains") from parts of the Archdiocese of New Orleans ; it included areas in what is now the states of Kansas, Nebraska , North Dakota , South Dakota , Colorado , Wyoming, and Montana . First Vicar Apostolic was the Jesuit John Baptiste Miège, born in the Duchy of Savoy . In 1857 it became the Apostolic Vicariate of Kansas , which in 1877 became part of the Leavenworth diocese , the first bishop of which was the Benedictine Louis Mary Fink , who was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria . On May 10, 1947, Pope Pius XII was named. further as titular diocese to diocese used Leavenworth to the diocese of Kansas City in Kansas; first bishop was George Joseph Donnelly . On August 9, 1952, the elevation to the archbishopric took place .
Today's archdiocese includes the following 21 counties of the US state of Kansas: Anderson, Atchison, Brown, Coffey, Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Lyon, Marshall, Miami, Nemaha, Osage, Pottawatomie, Shawnee , Wabaunsee and Wyandotte.
