Hermann Hoberg (born December 11, 1907 in Osnabrück ; † September 21, 1992 there ) was a Roman Catholic priest , Vice-Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives and there for decades the only German-speaking employee.

biography

Hailing from a distinguished old family Osnabrücker Hoberg made 1927 Abitur at the High School Carolinum in Osnabrück. He studied Catholic theology in Münster and Freiburg and received by visiting the seminary in Osnabrueck in 1933 by Bishop Hermann Wilhelm Berning the priesthood . During his activity as vicar at the parish of St. Marien in Flensburg , he worked on the completion of his church history doctorate on the denominational relationships in the Osnabrück Monastery after the Thirty Years War. In 1938 he was in Freiburg to Dr. theol. and in the same year came to Rome for historical research on papal finances with a grant from the Görres Society , where he became a member of the priestly college at Campo Santo Teutonico in the Vatican . During the Second World War he developed a closer friendship with the German church historians Hubert Jedin and Friedrich Kempf SJ, who also lived in Rome .

After the Görres Society's scholarship expired, Hoberg seized the opportunity in 1950 and took over the work of archivist in the Vatican Secret Archives, of which he was Vice-Prefect from 1956 to 1980. Hoberg took on in particular the development of the archives of the papal Rota (Rota Romana), but continued his research on papal finances.

In 1971 he became consultor for the historical processes of beatification and canonization in the Congregation for the Processes of Beatification and Canonization (Ufficio Storico-Agiografico della S. Congregatione dei Santi). In 1980 he became a canon at St. Peter in the Vatican.

For many years the only German-speaking employee in the Vatican Secret Archives, Hoberg was the first point of contact for the scientists coming from Germany until his death, especially since as Vice-Prefect he was responsible for user support anyway. In 1979 scientists from all over the world dedicated a two-volume commemorative publication to him with articles that dealt with topics from Hoberg's research areas. 1987 appeared in the journal of the Römisches Institut der Görres-Gesellschaft , the Roman quarterly (vol. 82, p. 122-134), memoirs. Hoberg, who made little fuss about his person due to his modest and reserved manner, received several awards.
