Hermann Hultzsch was born in Dresden in 1837. At the age of 15 he modeled a portrait of a friend who showed his artistic talent. A bust of the founder of the Lauchhammer foundry for Count Einsiedel was also made before he began his studies . From 1854 to 1861 Hultzsch studied at the Dresden Art Academy and became a master student in Ernst Rietschel's studio . Rietschel had him design two relief medallions for the base of his Braunschweig Lessing monument.

In 1865, Hultzsch created the sensational figure “Summer”, which earned him a scholarship for a study trip to Rome . Eight marble reliefs and a marble statue of the prophet Ezekiel for the mausoleum of Prince Albert in Windsor Park were created there in 1865 .

In 1867 Hultzsch returned to Dresden, where he worked as a freelance sculptor in his own studio. In 1881 he was made an honorary member of the Royal Saxon Art Academy and in 1888 professor at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1888 he took part in the centenary of the Bavarian King Ludwig I in Munich as honorary president of the Art Association of Saxony . He made small sculptures for the Meissen porcelain factory , including the bust of King Albert, the sower and the skater. In 1905 he died in Blasewitz.
