Hermann Rogalla von Bieberstein
Karl Emil Edwin Alexander Lorenz Hermann Rogalla von Bieberstein (born March 12, 1823 in Brieg , Lower Silesia , † March 18, 1906 in Brenham , Texas , United States ) was a German-American civil engineer and politician in Texas. He was also a farmer and co-founder of the " Latin Settlement " Latium (Texas) .
family
He came from an old 1440 Rogale Dzierzbia in Northern Masovia coming in Duchy of Prussia besitzlich become and 1599 confirmed the nobility Prussian aristocratic family Rogalla of Rogale (Norman-Germanic-Baltic: Rogala Polish: Rogalski ) that in 1740 the name Rogalla von Bieberstein accepted. He was the son of the royal Prussian lieutenant colonel Friedrich Rogalla von Bieberstein (1796–1872) in Görlitz and Auguste Lorentz (1804–1856).
Bieberstein married civilly on September 24, 1855 in Brenham, ecclesiastically on November 15, 1855 in Fayette County Adele Hagedorn (born September 20, 1838 in Stau near Fischbeck ( Hessisch Oldendorf , then Hessen-Kassel ); † April 19, 1931 in Brenham) , the daughter of bailiff Carl Hagedorn in Stau and Marie Louise Knipping. Adele's great-grandfather was the brother of the famous astronomers Caroline (1750-1848) and Wilhelm Herschel (1738-1822). Before her wedding, Adele had just turned 17 and two years earlier (1853) had immigrated from Germany with her parents on board the “ Neptun ”. The couple had 11 children.
Adele's older sister Anna Hagedorn (1827-1900) was married to Victor Witte (1820-1900), who is considered the founder of the Latin Settlement Latium in Texas.
Life
After graduating from high school in Brieg, Bieberstein studied law , camera studies and philosophy at the University of Breslau from November 4, 1843 to April 28, 1845 , then went to Berlin and to his parents in Görlitz . During this time he decided to emigrate to the USA together with his cousin of the same name, with whom he was also close friends. It is not known whether both made this decision for political or economic reasons. On August 28, 1846, the Biebersteins traveled from Bremerhaven in a group of 120 emigrants (29 people with destination Galveston (Texas) and 91 with destination New Braunfels in Texas) on board the " Elisa & Charlotte " under the command of a captain Wendt and met entered Galveston on October 20, 1846, just a year after the state of Texas joined the Union of the United States .
Upon arrival, the two Biebersteins parted ways. The older Hermann described here first moved to Winedale in Fayette County, where he met the German artisan Rudolph Melchior (1836–1867). Later, Bieberstein and Melchior were among the founders of the "Latin Settlement" Latium (Texas) in Washington County .
In 1849/1850 he lived for some time with the brothers Ludwig, Rudolph and Albrecht von Roeder (1811-1857) before visiting his family in Silesia in 1850. Back in Texas, he received American citizenship on November 14, 1850 . From then on, Bieberstein lived as a farmer near Brenham.
In 1866 Bieberstein won election to the surveyor ( County Surveyor ) of Washington County. He held this position until at least 1871. As a member of the Democratic Party , he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives on December 2, 1873 as a member of the 14th legislative period (January 13 to May 4, 1874). During that time he was instrumental in three laws establishing Lee County , improving the tax system, registering births and deaths, and serving as a member of several committees responsible for immigration and land allocation. A second time he was a member of parliament from January 12 to March 15, 1875. As an opponent of the railroad, he spoke out as a member of parliament against the " International Railroad Bill ".
Bieberstein was also nominated by his party for a third term. He allegedly lost the election on February 15, 1876 extremely narrowly against his Republican opponent, the African American Allen Wilder. After some back and forth, however, Bieberstein was ultimately appointed by the election committee as a member of parliament on May 13, 1876. But already on August 18, 1876, in protest against irregularities in parliamentary votes, he announced his resignation.
After his departure, Bieberstein retired to his farm. He owned 390 acres valued in 1884 up to $ 4,000. In 1878 he was a member of the "Grand Jury" (Supreme Court). In February 1880, as in 1866, he was re-elected to the county surveyor ( county surveyor ) and held this post until at least October 1898, when he was already 75 years old. As “ Esqu. Brenham "he is registered as a member of the" Texas State Historical Association ", which was founded on February 13, 1897 at the University of Texas at Austin . All members must have done something for Texas.
Bieberstein died - just like his cousin of the same name in Gillespie County - at the old age of 83 on March 18, 1906 in Brenham (obituary) and was born on March 20 at Jaeger-Witte-Cemetery in Greenvine (Texas) near Burton buried in Washington County.
