Life

Education and orchestral work

Hermann Voss was born in Brünen on the Lower Rhine in 1934 . He received his musical training at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf and at the Freiburg University of Music with Sándor Végh and Ulrich Koch . After studying the violin with Sándor Végh, he switched to the viola under his new teacher Ulrich Koch. Shortly afterwards, in 1959 in Stuttgart, he was awarded first prize on the viola at the German University Competition. In 1959 and 1960 Hermann Voss attended the summer courses of cellist Pablo Casals in Zermatt . In 1962 he again won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich on the viola . From 1960 to 1967 Voss was principal violist of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra .

Melos Quartet

In 1965 he was a founding member and until its dissolution in 2005 the only violist of the Melos Quartet.

Teaching

From 1975 Hermann Voss worked as a lecturer for string quartet playing and from 1980 to 2005 as professor for viola and chamber music at the Stuttgart University of Music. In addition, he regularly took on lectureship at music festivals with master classes in Ratzeburg , Oberstdorf and at international master classes in London , Sydney and Tokyo as well as at the Academy for String Quartet Interpretation of the Hindemith Foundation in Blonay .

Painting and puppet theater

In addition to his tasks as a musician, Voss also devotes himself to a creative activity by making drawings, etchings, watercolor and acrylic paintings. After his retirement in 2005, Voss turned primarily to painting with acrylic paints . Among other things, he created picture cycles on Schubert's winter journey , on marionette theater , on favorite pieces of chamber music and on the situation of women with the title Women's Love and Women's Suffering .

With puppet figures, masks and instruments he created himself , Voss has been regularly giving private and public appearances in his own musical miniatures and pantomimes since he was a student in Freiburg . In addition, Hermann Voss runs the so-called bedroom theater in Waldenbuch under the roof structure of his private house , which, equipped with a small stage and around 20 seats, serves as a permanent performance location. Stage pieces worked out and performed by Hermann Voss are festivals of small performers and images of a performance .

The longtime solo violist of the SWR Symphony Orchestra and author Gunter Teuffel describes Hermann Voss as a universal artist :

“Musician, draftsman, painter, sculptor, marionette maker and marionette player, makeup artist, pantomime, theater man, director and musical writer. When I ask myself who in my environment unites the most varied artistic talents, I don't know anyone to whom the term universal artist would apply better than Hermann Voss. "

Waldenbuch concerts in Sankt Veit

Hermann Voss is co-founder of the series of chamber music events, the Waldenbuch Concerts in Sankt Veit , which he supervises and provides artistic advice. In autumn 1998 Voss was a founding member of the association responsible for organizing the concerts. A year later, the Melos Quartet opened the series of events with a first concert. As a result, many renowned artists were won over to the Waldenbuch concert series under Voss's aegis. For example, Waldenbuch has become a permanent contact point for concerts organized by the Federal Selection of Concerts of Young Artists of the German Music Council . On the 80th birthday of Hermann Voss, a special concert by the DAFO Quartet was performed in Sankt Veit. On September 22nd, 2018, the 20th anniversary of the association's foundation was celebrated with a hundredth concert in the Waldenbuch Veitskirche.
