Hermann Johann Anton Heinrich Friedrich Ritter von Schullern zu Schrattenhofen (born July 24, 1861 in Innsbruck , † April 14, 1931 in Innsbruck) was an Austrian economist and genealogist from the Schullern zu Schrattenhofen family .

family

Hermann von Schullern was born as the first son of the Tyrolean poet Anton von Schullern (1832–1889) and Paola Dorothea, née von Finetti (1840–1903). His siblings were the military doctor and writer Heinrich von Schullern (1865–1955), Elfriede (* 1862), married Abeni, and Oswald (* 1872), who has been missing since his 16th birthday. He was married to Theresa Magdalena Manfredi (1858–1946) from Pavone del Mella ( Brescia , Italy ). The daughters Elfriede, Eleonore, Irene and the son Manfred Schullern came from this marriage .

life and career

Hermann v. Schullern was born on July 24th, 1861 in Innsbruck (Tyrol) and enjoyed the usual upbringing of middle-class circles for the time. Between 1879 and 1883 he studied law and political science at the University of Innsbruck and obtained his doctorate in law in 1884 . He completed his legal and legal practice in Klagenfurt , Bozen and Innsbruck. Under the influence of Eugen Böhm-Bawerk , Schullern turned to the marginal utility school and completed his habilitation in 1889 on the subject of "Investigations into the concept and nature of basic rent". The Viena for economics gained school learning in 1889 and 1895 for the entire political economy.

In 1889/1890 he worked as a lecturer at the Innsbruck Commercial Academy. In 1890 he became an employee of Karl Theodor Inama von Sternegg's official, later a member of the Central Statistical Commission , for which Schullern repeatedly appeared at international congresses as its representative.

His lecturing activities extended to the Vienna Commercial Academy, Oriental Academy (1898, associate professor) and at the army institutions. In 1899 Schullern was given the opportunity to teach as a full professor of law and political science at the Technical University in Brno . In the years between 1901 and 1915 he held the chair for economics and statistics at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna . In the academic years 1903/1904 and 1904/1905 he held the position of rector of this university. In the course of his work as a consultant in the Ministry of Agriculture, he was awarded the official title of " Hofrat " in 1904 . In the years 1909/1910 Hermann v. Schullern build the Schullern-Schlössl in the neo-Gothic style above Aldrans (Innsbruck) . In the war year 1915, Schullern returned to his hometown Innsbruck and worked as a professor of political economy at the University of Innsbruck, where he was dean in 1916 and rector in 1922.

During the First World War, Schullern rendered valuable services as head of the Reconstruction Office in Gorizia , but after the withdrawal of the Austrian troops (1918) resigned his post despite a request to the contrary from the new provisional government.

Schullern also appeared as a genealogist. As chairman of the Tiroler Landsmannschaft and as a member of the board of the Heraldic-Genealogical Society Adler , genealogical contributions that are still noticed today were made.

Hermann v. In his capacity as chairman of the Tyrolean section of the Pan-German Association, Schullern campaigned for the indivisibility of Tyrol and later for Austria to join the Weimar Republic . As a respected curator of the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Hermann von Schullern zu Schrattenhofen died on April 14, 1931 in Innsbruck.

Writings and works

In his scientific work, Schullern turned to theoretical topics at the beginning, but over time increasingly to agricultural-historical and agricultural-political issues; Among other things, Schullern was one of the first to define the term tourism in 1911 . He published numerous essays in compilations, newspapers and journals.
