education

Education

Anton attended grammar schools in Trient and Innbruck, passed his matriculation examination in 1850 and devoted himself to studying law. In addition, he occupied himself with the Italian language and soon turned mainly to German studies and poetry, which accompanied him throughout his life. He was also interested in ethical and philosophical questions, about which he eagerly disputed with Georg Schenach and his friend Tobias Wildauer. In the summer of 1855 he passed the German language and literature examination for teaching at grammar schools with excellent results.

In-depth studies

As a young academic, Anton worked as a teacher of the German language at the grammar school in Innsbruck, where he found time to immerse himself in Feuerbach 's works and continued his aesthetic studies, the results of which he used for lectures on the external form in poetry held by him in February 1856 in the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum. During this time he was in close contact with Dr. Johannes Schuler , his colleague at the grammar school Adolf Pichler and Professor Heinrich Hlasiwetz .

A study trip to Denmark and Sweden left indelible impressions on him, so that in October 1856 he undertook a study trip to Berlin lasting several months , where he made the acquaintance of the brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm and Karl Lachmann . School learning heard at the University of the well-attended lectures by Moritz Haupt , Ernst Siegfried Köpke and other celebrities of his profession and spent several hours a day at the library to Gothic , Old High German , Anglo-Saxon and Swedish study. At the suggestion of his friend Lachmann, he began to translate Tegner's "Axel", which appeared in print in 1859.

military service

In the war years of 1859, Anton von Schullern went into the field as a lieutenant with the rifle company set up by Franz Thurner . He took part in a meeting on Monte Macao and was honored by Archduke Carl Ludwig for his courage to sacrifice .

Act

journalist

When the liberal "Innzeitung" was founded in 1862, Schullern took over the editorial office. Anton von Schullern was active as a correspondent for domestic and foreign media, such as the Viennese "Presse", the "Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung", the "Constitution", which has appeared in Vienna since the New Year of 1864. In the course of his countless reports, Schullern met the Norwegian poet Björnstjerne Björnson . He made further literary friendships with Georg Herwegh , Henry Longfellow , Wilhelm Jordan , Emil Palleske , Berthold Auerbach and Martin Greif . In 1872, Professor Joseph Daum, with whom Schullern was a loyal friend for many years, died. He set him a worthy memorial in the commemorative speech that he gave on February 29, 1872 in the Constitutional Association Innsbruck.

Poet and lyric poet

In addition to his professional activities, Schullern found time for poetry and published humorous poems such as "Frau Hitt", "An evening on the armpit". In “Narrator” there are critical essays by him as well as lyrical poems and a novella: “The Shy. Acts of a love story ”. He also dealt with epic poetry: “The Last Judgment”, which had already appeared in the “Autumn Flowers”. Schullern published his "Hedwig Cycle" in 1872. Music director Josef Pembaur received some songs from Schullern that Pembaur set to music . In 1873 Schullern completed a tragedy: “Signe”, in which he attempted to artistically shape the ancient, strange myths of the Völsunga saga (Chapters 1–8) for modern sensations.

His essay on Franz Defregger's “Last Aufgebot” , an essay that Defregger, as he said to Schullern, counts among the best that has been written about his picture, was followed by a detailed discussion of the beautiful picture: “Andreas Hofer's last course”. Particularly noteworthy are two contributions to the Tyrolean literary and cultural history, which he published in "Boten für Tirol und Vorarlberg" in 1879: The biographies of the Tyrolean playwright and actor AL Schenk and the academic gymnastics teacher Franz Thurner. On March 11, 1882, at the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Goethe's death in the Redoutensaal, Schullern gave the lecture, which was received with great applause, and which he repeated on March 30 in the Ferdinandeum. - During this time he picked up a favorite topic: The difference between poetic and prosaic diction and put down many sensible observations about the "poetic citizenship" of frequently used words and expressions in a treatise that was not finished until 1886.

School man

Since 1869, Schullern dedicated himself as district school inspector to the reorganization of the elementary school system. In March 1872 he was entrusted with the inspection of the schools in Innsbruck's city and country district. He was particularly eager to take care of the girls' school system in Innsbruck and the establishment of a female advanced training school and provided the statute and curriculum for it. His services to the Tyrolean school system have been widely recognized. In December 1874 he was appointed to the service of the Tyrolean state school authority, on September 11, 1879, he was appointed to the imperial council and on October 1, 1883, he was appointed ministerial clerk. After 15 years of school inspectorate and 12 years of inspector of the municipal schools in Innsbruck, Schullern submitted his farewell on health grounds.

Public interest service

Anton von Schullern took part in the festivities for Friedrich Schiller 's 100th birthday in 1859 as a member of the festival committee and wrote poetic contributions.

In October 1863 he held the celebratory speech in the Redoutensaal (city hall) in Innsbruck as chairman of the newly founded gymnastics club at the commemoration he had proposed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig . In the middle of 1863, as a member of the committee for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the unification of Tyrol with Austria, he was commissioned to write a patriotic poem that was recited to Emperor Franz Josef in the Redoutensaal in Innbruck . On the occasion of the publication of the celebratory poem: "Lied von Österreich und Tirol" a friendly relationship arose with Bartholomäus von Carneri and subsequently with Anastasius Grün . In December 1863 he was elected to the committee for the erection of a monument to commemorate the jubilee of the unification of Tyrol with Austria.

In 1865 Schullern was unanimously elected to a committee that had set itself the goal of decorating the house where the poet Hermann von Gilm was born with his bust and transferring his remains from Linz to Innsbruck. Schullern wrote an intimate grave love that was healed from the local song board after the remains of Gilm had been blessed in front of St. John's Church on the Innrain.

In 1867 he was elected to the committee of the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, where he took over the business of secretary and filled it with great commitment until his sudden death in 1889.

In 1870 Schullern was elected as a co-founder to the board of the Tyrolean elementary school association, which he chaired for six years. This charity provided hundreds of schoolchildren in Tyrol with teaching materials and thousands of children with clothes and school books. Under Schullern's leadership, the association expanded impressively with the establishment of branch associations throughout the German-speaking Tyrol.

On May 28, 1870, he was elected to the Innsbruck municipal council for the first time, where he made outstanding contributions to the urban school system in several legislative periods .

Schullern was a member of the Vienna World Exhibition Commission in 1872/73 and in the committees of various associations, including the Constitutional Association and the Sparkasse and Music Association.

He did not accept the suggestion made to him in 1875 to be elected member of Innsbruck's state parliament. He also turned down the offered dignity of Vice Mayor of the City of Innsbruck and the position of board member of the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum.

death

Memorial plaque on the residential building

On the night of January 11th to 12th, 1889, Anton von Schullern died of a sudden heart attack. His friend Johann Engensteiner closes the biography dedicated to him with the words: " Schullern was an elegant figure, slender and sturdy, agile and confident in demeanor. To those who were distant, he made the impression of a reserved, sophisticated man of the world. Whoever got to know him better, who heard him speak and looked into his spirited countenance, into his faithful blue eyes, he was captivated by the purity and mildness of his philanthropic nature. His heart was without guilt and full of goodness and so Schullern lived according to Goethe's word: Noble be man, helpful and good. "

Commemoration

The school learning street in Innsbruck district Pradl was named in honor of Anton of school learning and his sons Hermann and Heinrich. There is a memorial plaque on the house where he lived and died at Burggraben 4.

In the rest of Germany, mostly blasé and often very rarely appointed reviewers are responsible for the criticism. With you it forms part of the noble hospitality with which men of the very first spiritual rank receive the artist. That is why such criticism has an encouraging and ennobling effect on the audience as well as on the artist. And the latter will be the only thank you I can give you, the endeavor to pursue the ideal of beauty and truth with a steadfast gaze. You have really made my lot worthwhile again, indeed enviable, and often when the labor of it burns hot on my forehead or in my heart, the memory of your criticism will give me new strength and new courage like a refreshing drink.
