The heraldic association Herold, Association for Heraldry, Genealogy and Related Sciences in Berlin (original spelling HEROLD) is a scientific, heraldic and genealogical association based on the premises of the Secret State Archive of Prussian Cultural Heritage (GStA PK) in Berlin-Dahlem . Today it is the oldest specialist society in Europe for the research areas it oversees. The association currently has around 700 members worldwide. The association is dedicated to the historical auxiliary sciences , especially heraldry (heraldry), genealogy (family history research) and related sciences such as sphragistics (seal lore), phaleristics (order lore), numismatics (coin and medal science ) and prosopography (personal science ), but also with these related national and local history.
history
The association was founded on November 3rd, 1869 and granted the rights of a legal person on August 14th, 1882 by the highest decree. Today it is recognized as a non-profit organization with its volunteer employees. This means that the Herold Society is now the oldest and most renowned heraldic-genealogical scientific society in Europe for the research areas it oversees.
The founders were Friedrich Warnecke , who had recently been transferred to Berlin from Hanover , the heraldist Maximilian Gritzner , Carl Brecht, the coat of arms engraver and court engraver Carl Voigt, and Hugo Freiherr von Linstow, who was also elected first chairman.
When in 1934 Achim Gercke endeavored to subordinate all genealogical associations in Germany to a Reichsverein, the members of the Herold elected Kurt Mayer as their chairman in October 1934, the department head in the Race and Settlement Main Office of the SS . This then operated in cooperation with the Central Office for German Personal and Family History, Leipzig, the removal of Gercke.

The association has a coat of arms with the following blazon : “In black on a golden three-mountain, a herald with a golden tappert, on it the black imperial eagle, and silver-red underclothing that becomes visible on silver and red sleeves and red and silver leggings, in his right hand a golden herald's staff holding, on the head a red beret with one silver and one red ostrich feather. "
Act
The main research areas are heraldry , genealogy , seal studies , religious orders , numismatics , name studies and biographics as well as national and local history in the context of historical auxiliary sciences .
Activities and services of the association are regular meetings with lectures, maintenance of a special library and a scientific archive specialized in the historical auxiliary sciences , weekly information and advisory activities of the volunteer members, answering of written inquiries, advice on questions of heraldry and genealogy, examination of submitted coats of arms Heraldic and genealogical accuracy and exclusivity, management of the German coat of arms , the oldest and most renowned coat of arms in Germany (as a legal successor to the old heraldic offices ), publication of the same in irregularly appearing serial volumes, publication of various journals and monographs . The Herald has compiled the world's most comprehensive heraldic archive available to anyone interested.
Library
The Herold's special library comprises over 30,000 volumes from the "Herald-Wissenschaften", including valuable old holdings, a rich collection of individual family histories, a large collection of journals and many rare works on genealogy, heraldry, sphragistics, phaleristics, military history as well as local and regional studies, in each case also outside of Germany. The holdings are recorded in an online database and can be used by the public in the user room of the Secret State Archive of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin-Dahlem, Archivstrasse 12-14, during its opening hours. Borrowing outside the home is reserved for members of the association. When using the Herold office (only on Tuesdays 4 to 7 p.m.), you can also use a genealogical reference library and, to a limited extent, the service library of the Herolds Committee. New acquisitions are reported regularly in the quarterly magazine and through annual book launch evenings.

In addition to the association files (including the numerous biographical documents in the matriculation files ), the Herold's archive also has valuable archival collections and bequests. The genealogical collections include e.g. B. the collections Bardeleben, La Roche, Lassahn-Spruth, Lindner, Maltitz and Zitzewitz. For heraldry, the register of heraldic images begun in 1882 should be mentioned, with 150,000 records, the most important heraldic collection organized according to heraldic images. There are also seal collections, the large Klietmann religious collection and the Korbsche image archive with around 24,000 negatives, mainly of portraits of well-known personalities from the 16th to 18th centuries.

The Herold's publications include the Herold-Jahrbuch (1972–74 and since 1996) and, since 1959, the “Quarterly Journal for Heraldry, Genealogy and Allied Sciences” Der Herold (with various previous publications , including the monthly Der deutsche Herold and 1870–1934 1873–1889 the quarterly for heraldry, sphragistics and genealogy and 1890–1931 the quarterly for coat of arms, seal and family history )

In the German coat of arms (DWR) kept by the Herold, German civil and aristocratic coats of arms, old and newly established coats of arms, old and new, are registered for a fee upon request and after examination in heraldic, genealogical and legal aspects. A certificate with a picture of the coat of arms is issued for the entry. The publication takes place in the book series "Deutsche Wappenrolle" published by the Herold.

Since 2011, upon application and after examination in heraldic, genealogical and legal aspects, German coats of arms of localities, districts or districts that are not independent under municipal law, old and newly established, have been registered in the German local coat of arms (DOWR) managed by the Herold . A certificate with a picture of the coat of arms is issued for the entry.
Bard Life Medal
For special services to the Herold Association and the sciences it cultivates, the Herold bestows the Bardeleben Medal, donated in 1909, as his highest honor.
