In the 19th century, the Heuweg-Werke in Hanover was a limited liability company for the production of clear ice, which covered the city of Hanover's entire ice stick requirements until the general advance of refrigerators . history

The Heuweg-Werke emerged from the Germania brewery , which was founded in 1898 : After a consortium made up of the three Hanover-based breweries, Städtische Lagerbier-Brauerei , Vereinsbrauerei Herrenhausen and Lindener Aktien-Brauerei had successfully submitted a takeover bid for the Germania brewery in 1917 , the same year the majority of the former shareholders under their director Katz a new company . This bought back the property of the Germania brewery in order to build a clear ice factory on the site .

Equipped with the most modern equipment, the company was soon producing around 2,400 quintals of ice bars a day. In addition, the company, which in the short term as affiliated "Hannoversche confectionery and jams-Fabrik AG" dubs was, three more departments to:

The wine wholesaler in particular was one of the largest in northern Germany. Soon the company with around 800 members employed almost 200 people.

In the year of the Great Depression , Director Katz resigned from his position; on August 1, 1929 Otto Willführ took over his function. Willführ examined the various departments affiliated with the Heuweg works and determined that there was a greater need for investment in order to continue to do so . As a result, the departments were closed and the plant has since concentrated exclusively on clear ice production. As a success, the company was soon able to pay substantial dividends and cashbacks again .

During the air raids on Hanover in World War II , the company's buildings were initially badly damaged in the night of October 8th to 9th, 1943, and finally 90 percent of them were destroyed in 1944. Since large parts of the former male employees served and died on the war fronts , the few remaining employees at least removed the rubble during the war . But it was only after liberation from National Socialism and after the currency reform in West Germany in 1948 that the new ice cream factory began .

In the years of reconstruction around 1953, the former capacity was almost reached again. At that time, only the old residential buildings on the company premises had not yet been rebuilt, but preliminary work had already started.

Buyers of the time indispensable to the economy crystal ice were were in Hannover in particular the owners of pubs that often members of society, as well as hospitals, food and dairy shops and slaughterhouses , but also scientific research institutes and private households . It was only with the spread of refrigerators and cooling systems that the Heuweg-Werke ran into sales difficulties : In 1965, clear ice production was stopped and the company closed.

The ice factory culture center is located in part of the former factory facilities of the Heuweg clear ice factory .
