Hieronymus Annoni , also d'Annone , (born September 12, 1697 in Basel , † October 10, 1770 in Muttenz ) was a Reformed theologian and hymn poet from Switzerland and is considered the founder of Basel Pietism .

Life

He was born the son of a watchmaker and councilor; his ancestors had fled the Tanaro valley in Piedmont for reasons of faith . After studying theology at the University of Basel , he came to Pietism as a private tutor in Schaffhausen and deepened his convictions by traveling through Switzerland (1729, 1730–31), Germany (1732–33, 1736) and the Netherlands (1736), on which he met with leading pietists. In 1740 he became pastor in Waldenburg BL and in 1747 in Muttenz.

Annoni was best known for his preaching work. In 1756 he founded a Society of Good Friends , which became the forerunner of the German Christianity Society founded in 1780 by Johann August Urlsperger in Basel .

In the hymnal of the Evangelical Reformed churches of German-speaking Switzerland by 1998 two songs are included from Annoni, namely bless us by the Lord (no. 350) and Help, A and O (no. 549).
