The Hilsbach is a 10 km long brook in the Kraichgau , which flows from the left into the upper Elsenz after a roughly south-south-east run in the town of Eppingen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Heilbronn .

Another Hilsbach also flows to the Elsenz from the left at the lowest course at the war mill of Neckargemünd .

geography

course

The Hilsbach arises on the boundary of the formerly independent town of Hilsbach ( belonging to Sinsheim since 1971 ) in the Rhine-Neckar district from the confluence of several more or less constant source streams. Occasionally nine sources are mentioned. The Vollmersgrundgraben, which is the main upper course, rises a little south of the K 4277, which runs from Weiler in the east to Buchenauerhof in the west, on the boundary to the suburb of Weiler, also in Sinsheim, at about 260  m above sea level. NN . He follows this next to a field path a few hundred meters to the west and then turns south towards the village of Hilsbach, still as a field path ditch. At the sports area on the northern edge of Hilsbach, after a total of 1.1 km from the right, a shorter ditch flows into it, from there the stream is called Hilsbach, which now runs steadily south-south-east to the mouth.

First it crosses the village of the same name, the only significant settlement on its course in front of the city at the mouth. The 2 km long Odenheimer Graben opens out on the southern outskirts of the village, coming from the forest around the Eichelberg from the west . Further down, he passes the Mettelmühle and the Eichmühle one after the other , both of which are in a separate position on the bank.

After a little over half of the course, the Bruchgraben now flows into the urban area of Eppingen in the district of Heilbronn from the right and northwest. After about two thirds of the run, the Nesselbach , which previously passed through the village of Adelshofen, follows from the left and north at the former Adelshofen mill belonging to the Adelshofen district of the city . Both of these major tributaries are a little longer than 4 km. At the mill, the first major road crosses the creek with the state road 550, from which the Obere Mühlgraben branches off to the left immediately after the inlet. From then on, the Hilsbach itself is followed on the right by Landesstraße 552.

Only after the B 293 has crossed the small valley on a dam in the course of its loop bypassing the city in the north, the Hilsbach reaches the settlement boundary of Eppingen , where the almost 2 km long left side ditch also runs back. A green strip often remains undeveloped around the route of the stream through the city. It passes the old town center on its northern edge, then the Hilsbach flows out at about 186  m above sea level. NN in continuation of the Mühlweg from the left into the Elsenz in its large left curve on the upper course, with which it turns from southeast to north.

Catchment area

The catchment area of Hilsbachs covers 26.3 square kilometers, it is in the natural area Kraichgau predominantly in the subspace Eppinger Gäue and has next to it still in the upper reaches west of Hilsbach a smaller share of the subspace Eichelsberg around the same mountain Eichelsberg , with his peak altitude of 326 8  m above sea level NN at the north west corner is the second highest elevation of the catchment area. The highest is the Steinsberg at 333.2  m above sea level. NN with its castle visible from afar near Weiler on the north corner.

Because the Hilsbach runs into the large arch of the upper Elsenz, which rises not far from the source of its large right tributary Bruchgraben, the receiving water Elsenz runs almost parallel to the Hilsbach and without any significant left tributaries quite close behind the west-south-western catchment area border; behind the eastern to Elsenz below the Hilsbach estuary, on the other hand, gradually lengthening left side brooks of the Elsenz down to Ittlinger Sulzgraben compete . Beyond the two highest points connecting north-western border lies in the eastern part of the headwaters of the further opening into the Elsenz below Ilves Bach , in the west the headwaters of the Forest Angel Bach , who over the Leimbach in the Upper Rhine drained. The catchment area of the Kraichbach borders to the south on the uppermost western watershed of the Hilsbach, which flows directly into the Upper Rhine. On this last stretch over the Eichelberg towards Waldangelbach and Kraichbach, the catchment area border is part of the Neckar-Rhine watershed.
