geography
course
The Waldangelbach rises on the outskirts of the Östring village of Eichelberg and then flows in a very steady north-westerly direction through the Sinsheimer district Waldangelloch , the community Angelbachtal , Mühlhausen , the Rauenberg district Rotenberg and Rauenberg itself, which all belong to the Kraichgau , and finally flows shortly before its entry into the Upper Rhine Plain after a run of 17 km in Wiesloch from the left and southeast into the Leimbach .
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Waldangelbach lies between the river systems of the Elsenz in the east and southeast and the Kraichbach in the southwest and west, both of which are about half an order of magnitude longer. The highest point in it is on the Eichelberg near the village of the same name at 326.8 m above sea level. NN not far from the source and close to the southeast corner of the watershed, from which it extends in the form of a spindle about 15 km to the northeast to the mouth in Wiesloch at about 116 m above sea level. NN extends. Across from it, it reaches a maximum width of almost 5.5 km.

Nature reserve landscape at the Waldangelbach
The nature reserve Landschaft am Waldangelbach belongs to the districts of Rauenberg and Wiesloch. It has a size of around 11.5 hectares and includes former areas of the clay pit and parts of the Waldangelbach with meadows and forests. It protects the last part of the stream bed of the Waldangelbach from its confluence with the Leimbach. The valley is very wide, the right slope is gentle and covered with wine . The one on the left is completely absent, and its floodplain , once pure meadowland, is now almost completely plowed.
The small forest Angelbach has in the alluvial loess dug deep in many places and on both its steep banks increased a nice, mostly closed and semi-natural alder - ash - floodplain forest . Since usable loams and clays occur almost everywhere in this area , mostly from the Oligocene , parts of today's nature reserve were in use as opencast mines .
As early as 1987, a secondary biotope was created here by the Rauenberg Nature Conservation Association , including artificially created ponds in the fractured alluvial forest and improved the spawning opportunities for amphibians there , especially the yellow-bellied toad .
Since some meadow areas also came under protection, various humid communities of grassland, swamp forests and roadsides can be studied here for the flora . There are predominantly species that can tolerate or even require high nitrogen content , which comes from agricultural use, but also from floods .
On the banks and on the paths, for example, the butterbur , which with its huge leaves form entire corridors : a rare sight today. In the undergrowth of the alluvial forest, such indicators are the black elder and blackberries , in the meadows the blue meadow cranesbill and the white chervil and hogweed . Typical plants in very humid locations are the marsh marigolds , which already bloom in spring, with whose sap from the petals the butter was previously made yellow and the mead was sweetened with meadowsweet bushes . Less conspicuous grasses , namely numerous sedges and rushes, can also be discovered.
Numerous species of birds are also native to the nature reserve. Around 50 species of breeding birds have been identified to date, including such valuable species as oriole , marsh tit and willow tit , nightingale and red-backed shrike . Occasionally the kingfisher tries it with success on the steep walls of the brook bank.
Fruit and wine educational trail
The fruit and wine nature trail borders the nature reserve Landschaft am Waldangelbach and was created in 1992 by the city of Wiesloch in collaboration with the Wiesloch wine cellar , the winegrowers' cooperative , the fruit and horticultural association , the Wiesloch fruit growing cooperative and the land consolidation authority . The aim of this educational trail is to provide information about the importance and diversity of viticulture and fruit growing in Wiesloch and to point out the requirements for nature and landscape protection.
The Wiesloch fruit and wine trail is part of the Badische Bergstrasse / Kraichgau wine hiking trail . The total length of the trail is 2.4 km, with the hiking trail being lined with a total of 21 explanatory boards, which provide information on the following topics:
