Winemaker from Baden
Die Winzer von Baden eG (formerly Winzerkeller Wiesloch ) based in Wiesloch in the Rhein-Neckar district is an amalgamation of several wine cooperatives from northern Baden. The cooperative is the largest wine producer in the Badische Bergstrasse and Kraichgau areas .
history
19th century
The viticulture , which has traditionally played an important role in Wiesloch was thrown into crisis in the 19th century. The reasons for this were, among other things, the small-scale parceled cultivation areas, the lack of suitable cellar space, the competition from cheap foreign wines and the price pressure in the established wine trade. In addition, no single variety was grown, so that only about 10 percent of the wines produced were considered single-variety. The early standard harvesting date also did not allow individual maturation of the varieties, so that the "sour wine" from Wiesloch and the surrounding area fell into disrepute.
In the 1920s and 1930s attempts were made to create better production and sales opportunities with the establishment of competing local cooperatives in Wiesloch, Rotenberg , Rauenberg , Malsch and Malschenberg and, from 1930, with the annual Kurpfälzischer Winzerfest . At the beginning of the 1930s, the hybrids that had hitherto predominantly been found in the vineyards were also banned and the cultivated areas were then gradually planted with noble vines.
Establishment of the cooperative
In 1934 there was a record yield for which it was difficult to find buyers. Only three or two interested parties came to large-scale wine auctions at the beginning of 1935 in Wiesloch and Karlsruhe. When another record yield was expected for 1935, the head of the Wiesloch branch of the Badische Landwirtschaftsbank , Ludwig Schüttler, and the head of the agricultural school, Ökonomierat Hans Rösch, founded together with representatives of the Malsch, Rauenberg, Rotenberg and Wiesloch wine cooperatives on 17. July 1935 the sales association Kurpfälzischer Winzergenossenschaften seat Wiesloch . In the first year, the association succeeded in selling at least the previous year's harvest, so that the harvest of 1935 was secured. The Tiefenbach winegrowers' cooperative founded in 1936 was accepted into the association that same year.
When the former wine cellar of the Wiesloch wine shop Bronner & Heuss was up for sale in 1936, the supporting cooperatives of the sales association acquired the property, set up a bottle cleaning and filling plant there and employed a wine cooper. With the storage volume of around 300,000 liters, the basis for a common cellar economy was created.
From 1935 the deforestation of hybrids, the appearance of phylloxera, hail storms and late frosts led to a lack of wine. In this emergency situation, a nursery was founded in 1936 , in which 300,000 Ruländer , Riesling , Silvaner and Pinot Noir vines were refined, with which the cleared hybrid areas were replanted as community areas. The sales association was converted into a cooperative . When the Second World War broke out , the cooperative acquired the front building on the company premises and was able to increase its capacity to 500,000 liters. A wine from one of the newly created varietal vineyards was able to achieve an award for the first time in Freiburg in 1941, which was considered a breakthrough for all of the northern Baden winegrowers.
Post-war years
In the post-war years, wine was considered a natural currency, so that the number of deliveries to the winemakers was low. After the currency reform, the cooperative experienced a steep upswing from 1949. 1951 began with the vineyard consolidation in Rauenberg, where grape varieties were changed and a generous network of paths created. The Rauenberger Rebflurbereinigung was exemplary for the surrounding places, which mostly also followed. In some places there was even a resumption of the winegrowing that had already disappeared there and the establishment of new local cooperatives, which joined the Wiesloch regional winery as full suppliers. By buying and leasing cellars in Langenbrücken and Kürnbach , the cooperative was able to increase its storage capacity by 600,000 liters.
In 1959 a new cooperative cellar was inaugurated on Wieslocher Mittelpfadweg, which initially had a capacity of around 2 million liters and was expanded in several stages by 1978 to a capacity of over 15 million liters.
21st century
With the new construction of a grape collection system in 2002 and the associated merger of various local cooperatives to form the Kraichgau regional cooperative, important steps were taken towards quality assurance at the Wiesloch site in the new millennium. In the 2014/15 financial year, bottle wine sales were 4.32 million liters. In the summer of 2017, the previous "Winzerkeller Wiesloch eG" changed its name to "Winzer von Baden eG - Badische Bergstrasse & Kraichgau".
Grape varieties
The cultivated varieties today are Auxerrois , Bacchus , Gewürztraminer , Pinot Gris , Kerner , Müller-Thurgau , Riesling , Pinot Gris , Scheurebe , Pinot Blanc , as well as Dornfelder , Lemberger , Blue Portugal , Regent , Pinot Meunier , Pinot Noir and Trollinger .
Growing area
The vineyards of the Winzerkeller extend in northern Baden from the Badische Bergstrasse to the Kraichgau. In 20 localities between Hemsbach in the north and Bruchsal in the south, between the Rheintal Autobahn in the west and Sulzfeld an der Ravensburg in the east, around 2,000 winegrowers in nine local cooperatives cultivate a total vineyard area of around 750 hectares. This extends over the three major locations Rittersberg and Mannaberg and Stiftsberg, which can be distinguished in 19 individual layers.

The Wiesloch winery today includes the following local and regional cooperatives, each of which has its own grape collection system:

Electoral Palatinate Wine Queen
Since 1949, the cooperative has usually crowned the Palatinate Wine Queen every year, with two wine princesses at her side. The wine sovereigns are supposed to present the wines from Kraichgau and the Badische Bergstrasse at home and abroad as sympathetic wine ambassadors.
