Hiroshi Ōnishi ( Japanese 大西 博 , Ōnishi Hiroshi ; born June 18, 1961 on Shikoku Island in Tokushima Prefecture ; † March 31, 2011 in Lake Biwa , Shiga Prefecture ) was a Japanese painter and university teacher .

life and work

Youth and early work

Born on the island of Shikoku, he grew up in Osaka from the age of 3 . Two major events in his childhood aroused his interest in Western culture: the World Exhibition in Osaka in 1970 and the instruction in Western painting by the artist Kakuichi Shikawa . At the age of 12, the family moved to Tokyo , where he passed the entrance examination to the State College of Music and Fine Arts ( Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku ) in 1983 . In 1989 he completed his studies as a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in the field of oil painting, technology and materials. His bachelor thesis “La Truite” ( Eng. “The Trout”, 1987) was bought by the Japanese Ministry of Culture, the master's thesis, the picture “Salmon” (Eng. “The Salmon”, 1989) by the Daiwa Bank . In this phase he was strongly oriented towards the European Renaissance , whereby his human forms are reminiscent of Albrecht Dürer or Matthias Grünewald in connection with his ideas of fish and water. After graduation, he worked for a year as a research member at the university in the oil painting, technology and materials department.

Wall painting

In the following years he created several surreal and expressive oil paintings. At the same time he worked from 1983 to 1992 as a mural painter for the Shibuya PARCO department store in Tokyo. He later called this activity in his writings Kaisha ni okeru katsudō ( 会 社 に お け る 活動 , dt. "The companies / companies related activities"). On surfaces measuring 4.5 × 13 or 4.5 × 9 meters, he painted advertising images for various products on the outer wall of the department store. At first he painted alone, later he hired additional employees for these jobs.

Studied in Germany

From 1992 to 1997 Ōnishi studied with Günter Dollhopf at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg . In 1996 he was made a master student. Experimenting with paper, acrylic , ink, fabric and pigment became a search for his Japanese roots.

Return to Japan and main factory

In February 1998 he returned to Japan, initially as a lecturer and later as a professor at his alma mater .

In 2003 he made two trips to Afghanistan on behalf of the university , where he discovered the mineral lapis lazuli as a material and rediscovered it as a pigment in traditional painting. He first used the ultramarine pigment obtained in a complex process for his paintings and later for the manufacture of tea ceremony utensils. Together with the Japanese company Holbein Ltd. he developed a high quality lapis lazuli watercolor paint . As a professor in the oil painting, material and technology department of the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku , he taught the traditional production of lapis lazuli pigment according to the tradition of Cennino Cennini from the 14th century.

Sensational exhibitions with this painting technique led to his most important and most honorable assignment: on the area of ​​the most famous Zen temple in Kyoto , the Nanzen-ji , he was to paint a room in the associated Tenjuan temple using the lapis lazuli technique. The work included 73 fusuma -e (paintings on sliding doors). He was able to complete 12 fusuma-e.

On March 31, 2011, he had a fatal accident in a boat accident in Lake Biwa .

Work show

From March 20 to April 8, 2012, the first overall exhibition of his work under the title "ONISHI HIROSHI Retrospective - View of Remembrance - 大 西博 回顧展 幻景 " took place posthumously on the campus of Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku . In addition to numerous early works, the paintings that were created using his lapis lazuli technique were shown. In addition, the collection of utensils for tea ceremonies was presented for the first time. It consists of 30 tea cups made of burnt lapis lazuli pigment. There are also tools made of bamboo and wood, which are coated with lapis lazuli pigment.

For Hiroshi Ōnishi, the connection between Eastern and Western painting was a central concern. Part of the work is now in Germany with his widow Martina Wagner-Onishi.

Tea ceremonies

Tea ceremony in Myoko

On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Tokyo University of the Arts, the four-day event "Geidai Chakai" (tea gathering of the Geidai ) took place in October 2007 . Hiroshi Onishi created several objects for tea ceremonies, including the first burnt tea bowl with a glaze made from lapis lazuli pigment. More tea ceremonies followed in public spaces.
