The Holy Family was the Catholic Church in Rodewald , a parish in the Nienburg / Weser district in Lower Saxony . It was most recently a branch church of the parish of St. Bernward with its seat in Nienburg in the diocese of Hildesheim . The church named after the Holy Family was located in the northern part of Rodewald and was the northernmost church in the dean's office in Hanover. The path on which the church was located is named after the founder and long-time pastor of the community, Georg Wengler.

history

As a result of the Second World War , Catholic refugees and displaced persons , mainly from Silesia , settled in the Protestant area around Rodewald since the Reformation .

The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1961 and its consecration followed on September 30, 1962 . In 1962, the neighboring Catholic senior citizen center “Holy Family” was opened, and today it is run by Protestants. The adjacent rectory was also built in 1961/62.

From November 1, 2006, the church belonged to the parish of St. Bernward in Nienburg, previously it was part of the parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Mandelsloh . The membership of the church's deanery changed on May 1, 2007 from the deanery of Hanover North / West to the then newly established deanery of Hanover.

Due to declining financial resources, but also the decreasing number of priests and church visitors, all churches in the Diocese of Hildesheim were classified according to their future needs. At that time the Rodewald church was seen as "not absolutely necessary for pastoral development". However, at that time there was still no reason to plan for their profanation . Due to the need for renovation that now exists, Bishop Norbert Trelle issued a decree on November 6, 2014 to profanate the church. On January 18, 2015, the church was profaned by Vicar General Werner Schreer . The church building has been sold and is to be converted into a residential building. Catholic services continue to take place in Rodewald, in the Protestant St. John's Church or in the house chapel of the senior citizen center.

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 25 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , as a nave construction with a turret . Two bells hung in the ridge turret, which was crowned by a weathercock . They were expanded on April 8, 2015 and have been ringing in the Protestant village church in Jühnsdorf ( Brandenburg ) since October 2, 2016 . The mosaic above the front door shows the Holy Family fleeing into Egypt .

The church stalls offered 108 seats. On the back wall of the chancel a relief showed Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus , on the side walls there were 15 stations of the cross . The baptismal font and a confessional were located under the organ gallery . The church singing was accompanied by an electronic organ .

The Marienkapelle open to the nave and the parish hall were built to the south of the church . A statue of the Heart of the Virgin Mary had its place in the Lady Chapel . Another statue showed St. Joseph with the baby Jesus , as well as an ax in his left hand as an attribute of his profession as a carpenter . Also Opferkerzen could be set up in the Lady Chapel.
