action

A wedding is pending between the Cologne-born architect Max Hauser and the noblewoman Bianca D'Arcadia from Rome . When Bianca, who has just received a tip from her confidante Sofia about Max's suspected infidelity, from the balcony overhears Max and a young flight attendant hugging, she angrily storms out of her family's property to drive away with the convertible parked in the courtyard. Max can barely jump into the car after saying that it is not what she thinks. To which Bianca had only the mocking reply that that was an original excuse.

Milan . A week earlier: Bianca loses her job as a waitress, because she contradicts and rebukes a young woman who is accompanied by Max, who is blasé as a guest in the restaurant. Max feels responsible and apologizes to her. The result is a night together that is so special for Max that he proposes to Bianca the next morning. However, Bianca does not believe in a common future and runs away. Max doesn't think about giving her up and searches for and finds her in Rome in her fathers castle. She is a real princess with various other titles and can look back on a long gallery of ancestors. Max is amazed. He came to tell her that he loved her and wanted to make her happy, he confesses to Bianca, without being impressed that his waitress turned out to be a princess.

Bianca's parents, primarily her mother, are not very pleased with their daughter's new boyfriend, whose mother runs a wine shop and whose father is a dentist. Max wastes no time and asks Vibaldo and Gioia D'Arcadia for their daughter's hand. The princess is horrified and wants to cut this connection far below her level today rather than tomorrow. Her husband says that Bianca is of legal age and that if she wants to get married there is nothing to be done about it.

Max calls his parents and tells them about his upcoming wedding. You arrive immediately. The gathering of the Hauser family on the D'Arcadias estate is tense. The men get along quite well, but the princess looks down on the bourgeoisie, who in her eyes have no demeanor. Then Walter Hauser travels to his lover, the flight attendant Xenia, whom he had promised to speak to his wife to tell her that he would part with her. At the same time, Princess Eva cleans up Hauser, whom she has visited again to say goodbye. Vibaldo D'Arcadia is able to appease Eva, who leaves the palazzo furiously.

Bianca tells Max that her grandmother wants to get to know him and Max confesses to her that he will have to start his job as an architect in Dubai in ten days . The couple decides to get married beforehand. The Princess in particular is appalled by this new news. Max calls in to Bianca's grandmother, Her Highness Donna Costanza. Both quickly get into conversation. In the end, the old lady signals her approval of choosing her granddaughter.

Since the princess also realizes that she can no longer do anything about the decided marriage, she at least wants it to be an unforgettable celebration. It starts with planning. At a meal together, however, it turns out that the royal family is facing bankruptcy. The prince can no longer pay the outstanding bills. The property has to be sold. When the prince collapses from anaphylactic shock , Dr. House his life. Although he and his wife accepted the invitation, Eva now knows that Walter wants to leave her and only plays the game so as not to spoil her son's wedding.

Donna Costanza wants her granddaughter to at least inherit the family jewelry if the palazzo is already lost. In Max's presence, she tells the story of a treasure hidden in the walls of the building, for which her ancestors would have looked in vain. Although Bianca thinks it's just a legend, Max's interest is piqued.

Back to the wedding day: Max can convince Bianca that Xenia is his father's mistress, who is now probably pregnant. Bianca asks him to promise her that they will never become like his and her parents. Then, however, there are new misunderstandings between the two, which lead to Max leaving the Palazzo in a hurry. So he no longer realizes that he was right in his assumption that that treasure might be hidden behind a hollow wall that Donna Costanza had spoken of. This upsets the old lady so much that her heart no longer cooperates and she collapses dead. Because of this loss, Bianca and Max get back together. The couple marries and the palazzo is converted into a museum due to the murals by Michelangelo discovered behind the cavity wall .

criticism

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm pointed their thumbs to the side and awarded one of three possible points for humor and eroticism. They wrote: “The German-Italian TV Schmonzette looks like a 50s farce, only without its nostalgic appeal. Pretty images of Rome and the charming Tognazzi (Silver Bear for the direction of 'Bloody Sunday', 1991) make the kitsch just bearable. ”Conclusion:“ Roma aroma meets moth box smell ”

Tilmann P. Gangloff rated the film for tittelbach.tv and gave it 3 ½ out of 6 possible stars. His summarizing verdict was: “'Wedding in Rome' is a fairly conventional romantic comedy, not necessarily full of surprises, but well cast & well acted. Leading actor Matthias Zera is an interesting new face, and Rome is always worth a trip. ”[…] After all,“ Germans are embodied by Germans ”and“ Italians by Italians ”, the critic said. The ensemble is also "a well-put together mixture of old and young". It is also thanks to Matthias Zera's performance that “Max, who was initially a little pale, is increasingly gaining in format”. For the role of the patriarch Vibaldo D'Arcadia, the “producers could have won Ricky Tognazzi”, who is not as well known in this country as his father Ugo , but has “the charisma for this role”. With Krassnitzer there is “the right counterpart” on the German-speaking side, the two actors would “complement each other magnificently”. The director staged the film as "light entertainment, but highly professional". [...] "The Palazzo in the heart of Rome" is "a splendid setting".

The film service stated succinctly: a romantic (television) comedy that is not very original, but at least purposefully tells of the relativity of wealth in the face of love. - From 14.
