Holmen was founded in 1862 by Norwegian emigrants. Since May 7, 1946 it has officially been named a village. The racial the population was composed of 90.4 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 7.0 percent Asian and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.1 percent of the population.
