The VF 400 F (NC 13) is a motorcycle produced by Honda from 1982 to 1986 . The motorcycle was never officially available in Germany. The Munich dealer Motorrad-Spaett sold the vehicle for 7,998 DM . The motorcycle was in direct competition with the Yamaha RD 350 YPVS .

The Honda VF 500 F was later developed from the VF 400 F. A variant with full cladding was offered under the designation VF 400 F2.

engine

The Honda has a transversely installed V4 engine with 399 cm³ and a claw-shift six-speed gearbox. The cylinders have an angle of 90 °. The valve control takes place via double overhead camshafts ( DOHC ) and rocker arms. The camshafts to operate the four valves per cylinder are driven by two tooth chains. These have automatic chain tensioners. The cylinders have a bore of 55 mm, a stroke of 42 mm and a compression of 11: 1. The petrol is supplied by four Keihin carburetors. The motorcycle also has a contactless transistor battery ignition, a hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch, electric starter and an O-ring chain.

landing gear

The chassis construction is based on the Honda VF 750 F with the double-loop bridge frame made of steel . However, the tubes have round instead of angular cross-sections. The left, unscrewable beam is used as a water pipe for the coolant. This makes it possible to save weight and space. The tubes consist of pressed half-shells that are welded together.

The telescopic fork is air-assisted and has a mechanical anti-dive system. The diameter of the standpipes is 35 mm and the spring travel 140 mm. The rear central spring strut is also air-assisted, has a Pro-Link system and offers a spring travel of 108 mm. The rear swing arm is cast from aluminum . The swing arm is supported by two short bearing bolts. The motorcycle has a wheelbase of 1415 mm, a steering head angle of 63.5 degrees and a caster of 91 mm. The Honda has encapsulated, internally ventilated, hydraulically operated single-disc brakes with a diameter of 226 mm and floating calipers with double pistons. The internal ventilation is not very effective, so fading can occur with heavy braking .

The motorcycle has a main stand.

Dimensions and weights

The Honda is 2060 mm long, has a seat height of 790 mm and a usable seat bench length of 600 mm. The two-part aluminum handlebar is 700 mm wide. The turning circle is 4860 mm.

The motorcycle weighs 194 kg with a full tank. 48% of this is on the front wheel. The permissible total weight is 360 kg. The tank holds 16.5 liters.

power

The output is 40.5 kW at 12,300 rpm. The liter output is thus around 101.5 kW. The highest torque is achieved at 9500 rpm with 35.5 Nm. The top speed is 185 km / h. The motorcycle accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 5.6 seconds. The Honda needs 11.2 seconds to accelerate from zero to 140 km / h. Consumption is given as 5.8 liters of premium gasoline per 100 km.
