The Honda XR 500 is a motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The Enduro was built at the same time as the launch of the Honda XL 500 for the US market. The XR series is characterized by a solo bench seat with tool bag, deep lamp mask, round speedometer with glass instead of plastic, foldable footbrake and gear levers and more power than the XL models.

engine

The single-cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 36 hp from a displacement of 498 cm³ . The piston runs in an aluminum cylinder with a gray cast iron sleeve. The cylinder has a bore of 89 mm diameter, the piston has a stroke of 80 mm with a compression ratio of 8.6: 1. Four roof-shaped valves, which are operated by forked rocker arms and an overhead camshaft , ventilate the engine. The carburetor has a 34 mm passage with a choke control directly on the carburetor. The engine vibrations are reduced by a balance shaft . The lubrication is designed as an open circuit with a wet sump without an oil filter and gives the engine very short oil change intervals.

drive

The transmission has five gears. The transmission is geared differently compared to the XL; the first three courses are more closely spaced. The engine is started with a kick starter and is made easier by an automatic decompression mechanism. The manifold has a wall thickness of 1 mm and is very light, the muffler is shaped differently, lighter and has a removable damper insert.

landing gear

The rear brake anchor is made of perforated aluminum. The front and rear suspension travel is 20 mm more than the XL model. The swingarm has no holes for passenger pegs and a spring-operated chain tensioner. The front brake has 20 mm less diameter and the rear wheel has no shock absorber.

Furnishing

The brake and clutch levers are foldable and lighter, and there is no mirror mount. The engine identification begins with PE 01E. There is no idle indicator switch, the alternator coils are significantly smaller, the rotor is lighter.

As is usual for such machines, a battery, ignition lock and trip counter are missing. The rectangular headlight incorporated into the front mask (see under lighting) was only used for decoration.

Follow-up models to the XR series

From 1981 the Honda XR 500 R ( VIN code PE010) came onto the market with the Pro Link spring system.

In 1983 the XR 500 R (VIN code PE03) was equipped with the further developed RFVC valve train (Radial Four Valve Combustion), dry sump lubrication and a front disc brake.

As a successor model, the XR 600 with 591 cm³ displacement and more power went on sale in 1985 .

From 2000, with the introduction of the liquid-cooled Honda XR 650 R, the displacement was increased to 650 cm³.
