Horst Aloysius Massing (often also Horst A. Massing and Horst Massing ; born October 25, 1930 in Ibbenbüren ; † June 23, 2011 there ) was a German doctor , specialist journalist and local politician ( CDU ).

Life

Youth and education

Horst Aloysius Massing was born as the son of alternative practitioner Anton Massing an der Umfluth in Ibbenbüren, but later grew up on the Barlag farm. In the post-war period he initially worked as a carter , but then studied medicine at the University of Graz and the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . Since 1954 he was a member of the Catholic student association Markomannia in the KV . In 1957 he was awarded the dissertation studies on the speed performance of the driver under the influence of alcohol at the Medical Faculty of the University of Münster Dr. med. PhD .

Working as a general practitioner and national activities

After working in the clinic, Horst A. Massing settled in 1964 in his parents' house on the Umfluth as a specialist in general medicine . In addition, he worked as a medical specialist teacher for medical assistants at the vocational college and was involved early on in medical professional associations at the state and federal level. For many years, Massing was chairman of the Tecklenburger Land medical association and was active in the professional association of general practitioners in Germany (Hausärzteverband e.V., BDA) both in the federal association and in the Westphalia-Lippe regional association. In 2010 he was a delegate at the German Medical Association for the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association . In 2007 at the 110th German Medical Congress, as the oldest member of the German Medical Association, he traditionally had the task of obliging the newly elected board members to “faithfully conduct their duties for the benefit of the German medical profession”.

Massing wrote not only for medical journals as Medical Tribune , but was also long-time chief editor and columnist of the BDA Association organ The medical practitioner (later renamed The family doctor ). He was also the initiator and, until his death, editor-in-chief of the state paper Der Hausarzt in Westphalia . He often used HAM and Till as abbreviations or pseudonyms . Massing's sharp analyzes of health and social issues and his humor were highly valued by the readership.

The motivational seminars generally known as “massing seminars” for the correct and complete accounting of general practitioner services also made him well-known within the medical profession. He was a controversial commentator on the so-called “ Uniform Assessment Standard (EBM) ” with its many bureaucratic facets, which he also liked to explain to his colleagues in rhyme in his seminars. Not least in this function, the “father of the fee regulations” was a popular speaker at medical congresses.

Engagement with the DRK and in local politics

His work for the German Red Cross (DRK) in the Tecklenburger Land was closely interwoven with his work as a general practitioner . From 1974 to the end of 2010 he was chairman of the local DRK club in Ibbenbüren. One of the numerous projects that have been implemented during this long period of office is the new construction of the Rotkreuzhaus on Groner Allee in Ibbenbüren. The blood donation service has always been of particular concern to him . Within the DRK district association Tecklenburger Land, Massing was particularly interested in promoting speech-impaired and physically handicapped children - the opening of the DRK kindergarten "Mobilé" in Ostenwalde is largely due to his commitment.

In addition, he was involved in local politics and from 1969 to 1984 for the CDU on the city council of Ibbenbüren. The fact that the Aasee was created in the 1970s is largely thanks to his efforts: Massing, whose parents' house and practice was on the flood, near the planned waterfront, prepared the ground for successful negotiations between the city and landowners. He is also considered the spiritual father of the Ibbenbüren "Südtangente" (Weberstraße) and fought for the preservation of old buildings in Ibbenbüren.

The hobby farmer owned a farm in Bockraden and was a passionate supporter of FC Schalke 04 .

Dr. med. Horst Aloysius Massing died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 80 on June 23, 2011 in his hometown. He found his final resting place in the family grave in the Ibbenbüren central cemetery .

Honors

Horst Aloysius Massing's broad social commitment has been recognized several times. The DJK Arminia Ibbenbüren awarded him the Order of Coal in 1982 in recognition of his services to his hometown. In 2004, the Federal President awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . During the award ceremony with District Administrator Thomas Kubendorff , Mayor Otto Lohmann also presented him with the City of Ibbenbüren Medal of Honor. The Tecklenburger Land medical association appointed him honorary chairman. The DRK has also honored him several times, for example in 2009 with the Medal of Honor for 35 years of voluntary work.
