The Huamantanga District is located in the Canta Province in the Lima Region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. In 2017, 752 people lived in an area of ​​493 km². In 1993 the population was 1300, in 2007 it was 1265. The administrative seat is the 3398  m high village of Huamantanga with 367 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huamantanga is 14 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Canta .

Geographical location

The district of Huamantanga is located in the mountains of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the northwest of the province of Canta. The Río Chillón flows a short section along the southeastern district boundary.

The district of Huamantanga borders in the extreme southwest on the districts Carabayllo and Ancón (both in the province of Lima ), in the northwest on the district Aucallama , in the north on the district Sumbilca (both in the province Huaral ), in the east on the district San Buenaventura as well to the south to the district of Santa Rosa de Quives .
