Hugo Darnaut , actually Darnaut-Fix (born November 28, 1851 in Dessau , † January 9, 1937 in Vienna ) was an Austrian landscape painter .

Life

Hugo Darnaut was the son of the court actor Michael Fix, called Darnaut. He spent his youth in Graz and then did an apprenticeship as a theater painter with the court theater painter Heinrich Burghart in Vienna, then he studied at the Vienna Academy from 1871–1872 with Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels . With a scholarship he came to Düsseldorf , the center of landscape painting at the time, where he learned from Andreas Achenbach , Robert Meyerheim and Johannes Wortmann . In 1877 Darnaut became a member of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. In the 1890s he took lessons from Gustav Schönleber in Karlsruhe for a year .

After Emil Jakob Schindler's death , Darnaut rented Plankenberg Castle in the Vienna Woods from 1893–1912, where Schindler had run his famous school for landscape painting for many years. His numerous students included u. a. Therese Schachner (1869–1950) and Rosa Mayreder . He was particularly prominent as an organizer of major events that took place in Berlin , Paris , Venice , etc. In 1900 he and Erwin Pendl created a bird's eye view of Vienna for the Paris World Exhibition . In 1912 Hugo Darnaut moved to the "Gschwendthof" near Maria Anzbach not far from Plankenberg and continued his rich work here. From 1913 to 1918 he was president of the cooperative of visual artists in Vienna.

Hugo Darnaut was a citizen of the city of Vienna (1930), an honorary citizen of the Technical University (1925) and the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. After his death he was given a grave of honor at the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery (Group 5, No. 67) in Vienna- Favoriten . In 1955 the Darnautgasse in Vienna- Meidling was named after him.

Hugo Darnaut was primarily a landscape painter who worked in the succession of Austrian mood impressionism. He tended to have an idyllic view of his motifs and enjoyed great success with audiences during his lifetime.
