IOIO is a Bee Gees song that appeared on the album Cucumber Castle . It was written by Barry and Maurice Gibb . The song was released as a single in March 1970 and had success in the European charts. The music video is from the movie Cucumber Castle .

It became a cult fan favorite, making it onto Best of Bee Gees, Volume 2 , followed by their comeback single Lonely Days .

admission

The title “IOIO” is derived from the calls of the chorus sung by Maurice, accompanied by Colin's drums while Barry sings the verses and plays the guitar. Former Bee Gees guitarist Vince Melouney played the guitar when the song was first recorded on June 12, 1968, when they were recording the songs for their fifth album and third international album, Idea . However, he was not present at the song's completion as he left the group when the subsequent album Odessa followed. The second presentation of the song was on October 8, 1969 after they recorded Twinky and The Chance of Love . Terry Cox , the drummer for the band Pentangle , added drum chords to the October 8th version. Maurice stated that the song was not completely finished, but it was still in Barry's voice. The song is also the only Bee Gees A-side single to feature vocal solos by Maurice Gibb, here with “IO” vocals.

Musical structure

It marked the group's first conscious entry into so-called world music . According to Robin Gibb , the idea came about when his brother Barry visited Africa. Maurice Gibb described this as "Barry's African excursion". This results from the percussion pause at the beginning of the song.
