IC 2231 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E0 in the constellation Canis Minor south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 401 million light years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 498 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on March 23, 1895 .
