The industrial union Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt (IG BAU) is the fifth largest single union in the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) with a good 247,000 (181,012 male, 66,169 female) members (as of 2018 ) . IG BAU was created on January 1, 1996 through the merger of IG Bau-Steine-Erden (IG BSE) and the horticultural, agricultural and forestry union (GGLF), both of which have a long tradition. This goes back to the 19th century.

At the time of its foundation (1996) it had around 720,000 members. That number had dropped to 540,000 by December 2000. When it was ten years old, IG Bau had 392,000 members, and at the end of 2009 around 325,000.

According to its statutes, IG BAU is responsible for the following economic and administrative branches: construction , building materials industry , waste disposal and recycling , agriculture and forestry , building cleaning and management , as well as environmental and nature conservation . It thus represents employees who work , for example, as construction workers , painters and varnishers , glaziers , roofers , scaffolders , building cleaners , gardeners , horticulturalists and landscapers , florists , forest workers, employees in cement works or landscape protection associations.

IG BAU is a basic organization with numerous local, city and district associations, specialist and company groups. According to the statutes, the decision-making process of the members takes place in the district associations. In addition, the district associations are the point of contact for members on site and answer questions about working life and membership. Young BAU, IG BAU women, IG BAU seniors and IGay BAU represent the interests of the respective sub-groups and organize their own campaigns and events.

In Steinbach im Taunus , IG BAU operates its central educational facility, the Steinbach educational center. The non-profit recreation organization offers members of IG BAU discounted holidays. IG BAU has set up several foundations - including the Social Society Foundation - Sustainable Development in Berlin. The IG BAU members' magazine, Der Grundstein / Der Säemann, appears ten times a year .

Together with the Federal Association of Color Design for Building Protection , IG BAU is the sponsor of the non-profit holiday and supplementary pension fund for the painting and varnishing trade (painter's fund ). Together with the Central Association of the German Roofing Trade, IG BAU is the sponsor of the non-profit social insurance funds for the roofing trade (SOKA-DACH).

IG BAU is a member of the German Trade Union Federation (DGB), the European Federation of Construction and Woodworkers (EFBH), the European Federation of Agriculture, Food and Tourism Unions (EFFAT), UNI-Europa , in the construction and Woodworkers International (BWI), the International Union of Food Workers and the European Association for Migrant Workers Issues , which was founded on the initiative of IG BAU.
