occupation

I'll be gone is a German film by Julia von Heinz from 2015 . The comedy film is based on Hape Kerkeling 's bestseller of the same name , in which he describes his pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago . Devid Striesow played the main role as Hape Kerkeling. It was released in theaters on December 24, 2015.

action

When Hape Kerkeling collapses during one of his many television and stage appearances, he is relieved that it is not a heart attack, but "only" a sudden hearing loss with subsequent gallbladder surgery. His doctor advises him to take a few months off. Unfulfilled by the prescribed domestic tranquility, Kerkeling tells his surprised agent, Dörte, that he wants to make a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago on the advice of his devout grandmother.

He went to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France , where he met the reserved Stella and the British journalist Lena. However, since he keeps losing sight of her, he walks the stony, steep path alone at first - a challenge for Kerkeling, who is not a sports fanatic. In addition, the overcrowded, cramped pilgrim hostels are a problem for him. He wants to break off the tour, but then meets Lena and Stella as well as the South American bon vivant Americo. An encounter with a little boy, which he interprets as his encounter with God and with himself, gets him back on track. Shortly before the finish line, he also manages to convince Stella with difficulty to complete the route. She suffers from the traumatizing loss of her daughter, with which she could not end a previous pilgrimage, and is now forced to give up due to a fall. Together with her and Lena, he happily reaches the goal in the end.

In the main plot, scenes from Kerkeling's childhood and early youth in the Ruhr area in the 1970s are interspersed throughout the film: the early death of his mother, growing up in a household with father and grandparents, children's services and conversations with his pastor, his first appearances Talent competitions and finally his first engagement with Radio Bremen .

background

Kerkeling walked the Way of St. James in 2001 and published his experiences as a book in 2006 . It stayed on the bestseller lists for a long time and, with around five million readers, is considered one of the most successful German non-fiction books of the post-war period.

1.97 million visitors saw the film in the cinema.

production

The film adaptation of the book was prepared over several years, the film was produced by UFA Fiction . Julia von Heinz finally initiated the shooting of the feature film in the summer of 2014 in close consultation with Kerkeling at the original locations as well as in Berlin and Brandenburg. The Spandau Citadel served as a filming location for a Spanish pilgrim hostel .

Kerkeling personally found the cast with Devid Striesow to be extremely good. He refused to play himself because 13 years had passed between his pilgrimage and the filming. As an almost 50-year-old, it is almost impossible to play away this time.

The film was funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg .

reception

“Failed all along the line (...) The problem with Julia von Heinz's film, however, is that the staging does not find any images for something that Hape Kerkeling easily, anecdotally and self-ironically, but seriously describes as a spiritual search for meaning, the search for God. So what happens inside during this external journey, this film has nothing to offer. "

From the German Film and Media Review was I'm off with the title value provided. The jury statement states:

“Julia von Heinz succeeds in giving an impression of both the charm and the hardships of the pilgrimage, although in the opinion of the jury she sometimes gives in to the temptation to reduce the landscapes to postcard views. But this also fits in with the charming, relaxed tone of the film. "
