Ichalia ( pronunciation : [ ixaˈlia ], Greek Οιχαλία ( f. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the southwest of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula . It was created on January 1, 2011 from the merger of five communities, which in turn were formed in 1997 from 52 small communities. The municipality, which covers around 420 km² and has 11,228 inhabitants (2011), is based in Meligalas , which is the largest settlement in the municipality with 1296 inhabitants.

Ichalia is located in the upper Messinia , in the Stenyklaros plain with the upper reaches of the Pamisos river and its source rivers and the surrounding mountains. These are in the southwest of the Ithomi , in the northwest of the Lykeo , in the north of the Tetrazi and in the east the Vromovryseika mountains as the northern continuation of the Taygetos . The neighboring municipalities are (clockwise, starting in the north) Andritsena-Krestena , Megalopoli , Kalamata , Messini , Trifylia  and Zacharo .

With the Temple of Apollo at Bassae  , one of the most important religious late classical buildings in the Peloponnese and one of the best preserved temples in Greece is located in the municipality of Skliros.

Ichalia is named after the ancient city of Oichalia ( ancient Greek Οἰχαλία ), which was located in the Stenyklaros plain in ancient times. A town community (dimos) of this name already existed from 1835 , but in 1912 it was divided into individual rural communities (kinotita) . In 1915 one of these communities, the village of Alitselepi (Gr. Αλητσελεπή, from Turkish Ali Çelebi ) was renamed Ichalia. The name was retained when, in 1997, ten rural parishes were merged again to form one urban parish around the Meropi parish, and finally it was transferred to the large parish created by the administrative reform in 2010 .

Community structure

The 52 municipalities that existed until 1997 have had the status of local communities since 2011 (Ez. Gr. Topiki kinotita τοπική κοινότητα) and elect a three-person council or a single representative as local representation, depending on the number of inhabitants. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
