Neruda conveys a love of poetry to Mario, who never went to school, and Mario finally takes the courage to use Neruda's words, which he pretends to be his own, to woo the beautiful but aloof Beatrice. He succeeds in winning her over. They get married, and Neruda becomes their best man. At the same time, he received the message that he could return to his home country.

A few years later, Neruda comes to visit the island. He immediately meets Mario and Beatrice's little son, whom they have given the name "Pablito" out of love and respect for Neruda. Beatrice reveals to the unexpected visitor that Mario had never seen his son because he was killed in a scuffle at a demonstration by the communists, for which Mario was politically enthusiastic, before his son was born. However, he had left a present for his friend. Inspired by Neruda's request to Mario at the time to describe the beauty of his home island, he had a tape with various noises, e.g. B. the sea, the wind or the little heart of Pablito. In addition, Mario had dedicated a poem to him, which he wanted to recite at the political event, but which never happened.
