The Cleaners ( In the Shadow of Network World ) is a documentary from the year 2018 , the content of presenters in the Philippines is, the content in social networks to delete.

The film is about content moderators who work on Facebook , YouTube and Twitter and control what is allowed on the Internet and what has to be removed ( digital garbage dump ). Your task is to observe and evaluate media content such as texts, videos and images on a daily basis and, if necessary, to delete or block them.

Most of them with around 150,000 people work in Manila in the Philippines , where around 25,000 pieces of content can be viewed by one person for a wage of three US dollars per day. Young Filipinos are grappling with money problems in a crowded city and are therefore taking these jobs. Many of the content moderators are Catholic Christians and do so, among other things, to take on the sins of the world.
The documentation also shows how social networks are used for fake news , internet censorship and manipulation and what role the content moderators play in this.
Production and publication
The film was produced by Gebrueder Beetz Filmproduktion , Grifa Filmes , Westdeutscher Rundfunk , Norddeutscher Rundfunk , Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg , VPRO Television and I Wonder Pictures . Color film distribution took over the cinema distribution in Germany and Periscoop Film in the Netherlands . The DVD distribution was taken over by Farbfilm Home Entertainment and Lighthouse Home Entertainment. The film was also supported by other organizations and associations. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW z. B. 90,000 euros available.
Directed by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck. Axel Schneppat and Max Preiss took over the camera work. The script was written by Hans Block, Moritz Riesewieck and Georg Tschurtschenthaler.
The film was first shown in German cinemas on May 17, 2018. It was previously shown at re: publica 2018. On August 21, 2018, the film was broadcast on television for the first time on the television channel Arte . A few days later it was also added to the media library . The film was broadcast on ARD on September 11th .

Reviews
The Cleaners shows the dark side of the internet like crime , torture , terrorism and child abuse and the people who remove this content. Remember the narrative structure it to a film-noir - thriller and reality often resemble a horror movie .
The film lets the viewer reflect critically on whether the world is really getting better through social networks, and shows how difficult it is to control all content on the Internet and how depressing and cruel the world is hidden away. It becomes clear how the facade of a fragile utopia is being maintained by the big corporations.
He also shows how the big corporations behind the social networks outsource their digital responsibility in the Philippines for low wages in order to evade it. The viewing of the image and video content and the associated emotions and experiences are told from the perspectives of many different people and conversations with experts and managers such as Mark Zuckerberg , an IT specialist at the UN and a former manager of Google are sought . It also shows how world events and human history are forgotten and how it becomes more difficult to retrace events, e.g. B. in armed conflicts and acts of violence.
There are several hundred thousand content moderators around the world who are responsible for deleting content, although the number of unreported cases is large. Countries like Germany are also not excluded.
