action

The 12-year-old Jonas supports his loving and sensitive but completely overwhelmed mother Sabine in the family, with the household and with the upbringing of his younger siblings, nine-year-old hyperactive Nick and four-year-old Miechen. Jonas had to take on responsibility early on after his father Sven left the family. Her mother Sabine has a secret that she calls a demon . Because of these disturbances, she is sometimes no longer herself. Jonas even takes over the steering wheel of the family car after Sabine almost caused an accident. When she suffers from her demon , she disappears into her room, locks herself in and is out of reach of the children.

After his mother had a nervous breakdown , Jonas took care of his siblings for a weekend so they could relax in the so-called sun valley. The siblings enjoy a carefree time without parents. But Sabine does not return after the weekend and only leaves a message on the mailbox that her fight against the demons has not yet been won. Jonas tries to keep order and continue to act like an adult, but over time he runs out of money and food. Miechen's kindergarten teacher becomes suspicious, and when Jonas comes too late to kindergarten to pick up Miechen, she takes Miechen home with her. The house is becoming more and more neglected, but it is becoming more and more cozy for the children because they redecorate it a little, collect small animals and insects and cobwebs form all over the house. This is how the cobweb house is created . Finally, the electricity and thus the lights in the house are turned off, and Jonas has to make do with grave lights from the nearby cemetery.

On his search for food, Jonas met the young stray Felix Graf von Gütersloh. He thinks himself that he is not really in his head because he is constantly scary and he speaks in rhymes . Felix helps Jonas and shows him how to get food from the closed supermarket. Felix becomes Jonas' guardian angel by showing him how to survive in a world without adult help and still remain a child.

The pressure on the children increases because the adults notice Miechens clothes and her hair growing wild and she gossips in kindergarten. Jonas' fear that everyone will come to the home grows every day. When suddenly the suspicious father turns up to see his mother, Jonas swarms him under a pretext at the front door and goes to eat ice cream with him. He cuts his siblings' hair at home using saucepans placed on their heads as stencils.

Felix has meanwhile bought bicycles for the children. Shortly afterwards, Miechen had an accident with her bike in the forest and wounded her face in the process. Jonas carries her home and can fend off offers of help from passers-by. When the wound became infected and Miech's condition deteriorated more and more, Jonas asked Felix for medication because the siblings didn't dare to go to a hospital or see a doctor. Felix breaks into his parents' castle to get medicine. The iodine tincture will gradually reduce Miech's inflammation. The children hide from the adults ringing the doorbell.

In order to reveal his mother's secret, Jonas enters his mother's room alone and after a short search finds her diaries . When Jonas has to read there that her three children are demons to her , and that the Sun Valley is a psychiatric institution, he is deeply dismayed, cries and gets angry. He studied late at night, the Sun Valley on to his anger and guilt feelings toward his mother crying out. When doctors come to the entrance of the clinic, he flees into the nearby forest. The camera shows how dead crows fall down on him as if in a nightmare and he is entwined by roots. He then runs home.

In revenge, Jonas burns Sabine's diaries in the house with Nick and Miechen. They hope that the fight against the demons is finally over and dance around the set fire in the living room. The smoke spreads throughout the house and the siblings almost passed out, but Felix is able to save the children. When Jonas wakes up, Felix looks at him and asks him whether he is an adult or not. Jonas has realized that he is not yet ready for adulthood and is happy that he can still be a child. In addition, her mother Sabine has returned. Nick and Miechen are happy about it, but the pent-up anger comes back in Jonas. He blames Sabine for the fact that the children's facilities in the house have been completely destroyed. The mother promises to rebuild everything. Jonas storms out of the house furiously and meets his classmates on his bike in the forest, with whom he had not been able to meet all the time before because of the difficulties in his family.

background

Mara Eibl-Eibesfeldt's debut film was shot in Heidelberg in October 2013 . After long discussions it was decided that the film would be shot in black and white in order to tell a dark fairy tale. The story is based on a true story when, in 2006, four children in Berlin were left alone by their mother for months and the house was transformed into a cobweb house through cobwebs right up to the children's heads . The director specifically wanted to shoot the film from the children's point of view, as children have a completely different perspective on life as adults and their logic works like in fairy tales.

The German-French actress Sylvie Testud and the actor Matthias Koeberlin were won over to play the roles of the parents. The children's roles were taken on by the unknown young actors Ben Litwinschuh and Lutz Simon Eilert, while the child actress Helena Pieske had already gained a lot of film experience. While filming, she could not read or write, so her texts were always worked on on the day of shooting. Matthias Koeberlin and Helena Pieske made an appearance together in the Frankfurt Marthaler crime series Kommissar Marthaler - Angel of Death .

The young director Mara Eibl-Eibesfeldt had previously made short films and worked with the producer Johanna Teichmann on her graduation film .

The film made its debut at the Berlinale 2015 and was shown in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino series . It was also screened at the Five Lakes Film Festival , at the ZLÍN 2015 - 55th International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, at the Shanghai International Film Festival 2015, at the Melbourne International Film Festival in Australia, in Canada at the Montreal World Film Festival / Festival des Films du Monde de Montreal - FFM, as well as at the Cambridge Film Festival in England, and it was shown at the Little Big Films Kinderfilmtage Nürnberg in Nürnberg. He has also been nominated for numerous prizes, including the Prix Europa 2015.
