Imchen [ ˈiːmçən ] is the name of an uninhabited river island of the Havel in the Berlin district of Kladow . It is about 2.5 hectares in size, the nature reserve including the surrounding water and reed beds covers an area of 4.8 hectares. Together with the four-kilometer-long shoreline between Gatow and Kladow, the city of Berlin purchased the island in 1924 for 100,000 marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency: around 383,000 euros) and had it increased.
Since September 9, 1933, the island has been declared a nature reserve. The main focus is on protecting the birds that live there , such as the colonies of gray herons and cormorants . The island is natural. Tourists are not allowed to enter it. Occasional landscaping interventions serve primarily to preserve the reed beds , which are important as a retreat for smaller species such as grebes and kingfishers .
The name of the island is probably derived from the term "Imme" for bees .
