The Püttberge are elevations up to 68 meters in height in the east of Berlin in the Treptow-Köpenick district . They are inland dunes within the Berlin glacial valley . With a relative height of more than 30 meters, they are considered to be the mightiest dunes in Berlin and Brandenburg .

location

The Püttberge are located in the easternmost part of Berlin between the Köpenick district of Rahnsdorf and its location in Wilhelmshagen .

They can be found in the Berlin glacial valley , which was formed as a result of the thawing ice masses of the last ice age , the Vistula glaciation . The flat, sandy, vegetation-free valley floor provided the material from which the wind blew up the Püttberge at the end of the last Ice Age. The glacial valley is still traversed by smaller rivers. South of the Püttberge, the Spree runs through the Müggelsee .

construction

The Püttberge form elevations up to 68 meters high and around 30-40 meters high above the glacial valley. Their formation can be traced back to the blowing up of sands in the glacial valley, this drifting sand could be blown over the several kilometers wide glacial valley during periods with no or poor vegetation . Similar drifting sand dunes can be found in the north of Berlin, for example in the Tegel Forest .

The dunes are overgrown with typical plants and are inactive, they no longer migrate. The vegetation includes pines , shrubs , herbs and grasses . Typical for dunes, there is podsol , an acidic, bleached soil on which these adapted plants can grow.

Because of the rare plant and animal species, the Püttberge have been under nature protection again since 1995 . By 1972 they were already under nature protection, in the meantime they have been used as a recreational destination with a toboggan run . The dunes are located in the Wilhelmshagen-Woltersdorfer Dünenzug nature reserve .

Surname

The name Püttberge is said to come from 'pütt' ( Low German for 'small'), the name Pittberge used to be common.

Transport links

The Püttberge can be reached easily. Among other things, they are connected to the road network via the Püttbergeweg. Not far from the Püttberge is the Wilhelmshagen S-Bahn station to the east .
