The Faule See is a naturally formed body of water in the Berlin district of Pankow and namesake for the surrounding Volkspark and the surrounding nature reserve.
description
The lake is located in the Weissensee district on the border with the Lichtenberg district , in the middle of the popular park and nature reserve of the same name “Fauler See”. This nature reserve, which was secured in 1933, has a total area of 24.2 hectares and is fenced all around. The eponymous lake takes up about 3.6 hectares, plus there are other wet meadows, but also hiking trails and children's playgrounds. The lake itself is a dead lake without a natural inlet. Today rainwater drains end in the Lazy Lake, which lead to relatively unclean water. To the silt to prevent the lake at regular intervals reed removed and mud dredged. A trench system is connected to the Panke and forms a partial drain. The corridor distance of the groundwater in the area of the Park am Faulen See is 20-30 meters in a taut main aquifer.
The lake is home to moorhens , mallards , teals and songbirds , among others . In total, around 40 breeding bird species were counted during observations in the 1980s.
